We had the good fortune of connecting with Jim Kalina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jim, what do you attribute your success to?
For me, I believe it’s authenticity, as well as my work ethic. I’m real, I’m me. I’ve always tried to live that way, even if it means receiving some negative feedback. I’m not afraid to be my own person and create things that inspire emotional reactions. I’m a bit wild and outspoken at times, but ultimately the hard work I put in to better my skill as a stylist is what helps keep me going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Anything in life worth doing is worth overdoing. That’s a mantra I try to always remember in my daily practices. Hairdressing, and especially GOOD hairdressing is hard work. It takes years of practice and study to even begin to crack the surface. Just when I think I’m getting pretty decent at haircutting, I go right back to the drawing board and start practicing harder. That’s what sets me apart. I’m constantly seeking to better myself and create something that will last.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Atlanta is amazing and has grown up and is growing up constantly. We would definitely be dining at The Consulate in Midtown. It’s probably our favorite restaurant due to its unique rotating, global menu, eclectic decor and intelligent experience. For ink therapy, I’d hit Southern Star(basically our home away from home). They’re the best and have become like family. At night you’d probably find me anywhere in the Edgewood/old Fourth Ward neighborhoods as there are a ton of cool restaurants and hang out spots, filled with the more artistic and creative side of the city

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, Mary, who always supports me through and through. I’ll sometimes come to her with crazy obscure ideas I want to try out wether it’s with my fashion or my work and she’s always open and encourages me to pursue it. My boss and mentor, Brayden Pelletier for pushing me and inspiring me and for bringing art back in to my life. He changed the way I work and view the work and I’m forever grateful for that.
