Meet LOOKiT: Three-Piece Band

We had the good fortune of connecting with LOOKiT and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LOOKiT, why did you pursue a creative career?
A career in music has many unique elements. Firstly, we get to experiment with creativity. Art is the closest thing we human beings can get to making something out of nothing. If we harness it right, it’s like a window into the transcendent – a little gift from God. It’s an exhilarating process, and it provides endless fulfillment. Even so, we admit it: making music the center of your life is a little crazy. And there are a couple reasons one can find himself in such a position – it can be selfish or selfless. Sometimes, it can be all about the self (there’s a certain part of MYSELF which cannot be expressed in any other way than through music). Sometimes, it can be a truly selfless journey into truth (there’s a certain kind of TRUTH which cannot be reached without music). The most powerful art is an exploration of the truth, no matter where it takes you. This is an element of music worth celebrating. A third, more tangible aspect of music is the unique connection it creates between people. There’s a certain kind of human connection which music provides which is hard to replicate in any other context.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Due to our diverse influences, we’re not tied to a specific genre. However, everything we make still ends up having the “LOOKiT” sound. In this way, we don’t necessarily conform to the standards of the music world. We often end up with a unique, difficult to define sound. Right now, we can’t tour in person – so we’re touring online. We are releasing a series of videos specifically for an online audience in which we perform new songs. The first series was called “Live From The Computer”, and it was comprised of primarily electronic songs. We’re in the middle of the second series, “Live From The Basement”, which will be comprised of organic, stripped down songs. These have been a lot of fun, and we plan on continuing this. Stay up to date on these videos by subscribing to our YouTube channel and our Instagram. We released our first EP, Circling The Sun, last year, and now we’re in the middle of developing our debut album. In the meantime, we will be generating support for the album by continuing our video series and launching a Patreon account for those who are especially invested in the future of our band.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We recommend restaurants like No Mas! Cantina and Bartaco. Then, go to The Yard for dessert! Cool places to visit include the rooftop at Ponce City Market, Piedmont Park, and BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir – the largest Hindu temple outside of India. Also, support Atlanta music by seeing a concert at the Tabernacle!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Out of all the shoutouts we could give, the “family/friends” category would definitely be the biggest. As a band composed of brothers and a cousin, family has played a huge role in our development as people and as musicians. Also, anyone who’s taken the time to listen/view our work so far deserves a shoutout. Our musical influences have played a huge role in our development. As a band, we are collectively influenced by a number of completely obscure, unknown bands… like The Beatles, Coldplay, U2. Individually, we each have our own diverse influences. Colby, for instance, would cite Camarón de la Isla, The 1975 and Janelle Monáe. Caleb would shoutout John Mayer and Surfaces. Max wants to shoutout Radiohead, Gordon Lightfoot, and a band from the UK called One Eskimo. There are also many creative resources we want to mention. Podcasts like Dissect, Song Exploder, and Switched on Pop are great creative fuel for us. And, collaborators like Ron Benner from Dogwood Recording (who produced our debut EP), and Sage Audio are also vital for our process.
