We had the good fortune of connecting with BeBall Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BeBall, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It was pretty simple for me, as I started to see that my days within basketball as a player were numbered, I had to look for somewhere to go. I knew that I wanted to stay within the game but I wasn’t sure on how or where. I took time to research on what I career choices were available and training fit me the best personally. Then as I thought deeper about the “why”, I wanted to give the kids growing up around me a opportunity to go further than I could go. I didn’t have the help I wish I had or to have someone pour knowledge and wisdom on me so now I’m committing my life and business to being that person for younger players I get the opportunity to train.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is about developing the playing I get the opportunity to be with. My whole goal is to find the best way to make them succeed but I feel where I’m different is that I focus on “holistic” approach when most only focus on one or two areas of a player. I care about my athletes in and off the court and focus on their skills, their performance training and their mental/psychological well being. I’m excited about the newest branch my business which is my clothing brand “Progress is the only Goal”. It is a movement that is about changing the perspective from being “there” to focusing on being in the moment and just winning today. Being able to focus the very next step just make progress. Not chasing perfect, not trying to be the best or looking at anybody else but just focusing on yourself and how you can become better. I know if we can adapt this philosophy and thinking it can have a major impact on our lives. I know because this is what has gotten me through my rough days where I wanted to quit and give up but then I shifted to only focusing on the very next step I needed to take and adding to my small wins. I have had to overcome fighting myself and my own thoughts, wondering if I’m doing the right things, thinking on mistakes too much, if I’m wasting my time or if I was good enough to call myself trainer. All of these negative thoughts kept me down some days but then I would think on a situation where I had to overcome a problem in a game or while training then it gave me the focus and motivation to keep going. That’s why i named my business Be-Ball Jones because it’s so much that we learn from basketball and sports in general that can be applied to life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Just depends on the person because Birmingham offers a variety of options and still expanding. We have different clubs and bars for the person looking to enjoy the night life. We have parks and trails like Railroad Park or Alabama Splash Adventure for the ones that enjoy the outdoors. We have the Civil Rights museum and the Birmingham Art museum. We have Birmingham Barons baseball, UAB women’s basketball is a very successful program along with the football and men’s basketball teams for those into sports. It’s a great city that’s has a lot to offer and still growing. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give all the credit to God. He’s done so much that already that can’t understand but the wild part is that it’s only the beginning. My parents and family played a major role with the man I am today and being in this position; especially my big brother (G.I. Magus @GItheartist). I want to give a special thank you to some mentors/big brothers of mine, Mr. Joe Clark, Joe Clark (aka TheRealJoeClark), and Steve Sills. They helped, inspired, and pushed me when I didn’t even believe in myself and showed me some great examples I hope I can come close to living up to. Love all of these people more than they will know. Wouldn’t be here without them.
