We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikole Morrow-Pettus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikole, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
For myself the one thing that I consistently received feedback on is my appearance on set or for personal clients. I feel that we as beauty experts have to give the client examples of our work may it be in ourselves or in our portfolio. It helps the client to relax knowing that you are on the pulse of fashion, and beauty. We are the book jacket to the ultimate novel. I also stay versed on current beauty brands and research products to keep up on anything the client may have interest in or questions about.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Makeup artist and educator of makeup for a 27 million dollar salon in Atlanta, Ga. I have worked in the salon for 27 years and I’ve never had a bad day at work. My passion for makeup, skincare, and fashion has led me down many roads in the beauty industry, I have conducted soldout workshops, worked NY fashion week, appointed lead makeup artist for countless hairshows and commercials. I have a resume and website filled with celebrities I’ve groomed for over 18yrs. It was easy for me to get to this level, due to not ever striving for fame or recognition. I didn’t have social media famed influences when I started my career, so there wasn’t anything to compare my work to. I built my platform on serving my clients and employers with excellence and integrity. I can say I’ve learned to let people choose their paths, as a mentor to many I use to want to help people grow and not make mistakes, now I support and allow them to choose which way they would like to take their career. Most people that are pursuing a career in makeup want to be an instant celebrity makeup artist, brand ambassador, or film/tv artist. But what’s appealing on the surface sometimes isn’t worth the lifestyle sacrifices needed to win in those arenas. My road has been paved with glittery eyeshadow and filled with amazing people along the way, I hope that all the rising artist that are reaching for a life in beauty will find the same road and get to experience it in a way that makes them say they’ve never had a bad day at work!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have been in the beauty business for 30 years, so there are so many people that have been apart of my journey. The CEO of my corporation Susan Dykstra saw something in me over 20yrs ago and promoted me to Cosmetic Director of Van Michael salons, where I had and still have the responsibility of hiring, grooming, and managing our makeup and esthetician team. Another amazing visionary is my friend and publicist Carolyn Sloss who introduced me to the world of celebrity makeup 18yrs ago, she has been the most supportive and encouraging woman in my career. I can say I have been extremely fortunate to have so many people who continue to promote my work and give me praise.
