We had the good fortune of connecting with Shila Nieves Burney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shila, what do you attribute your success to?
One of the most important aspects behind my success is pure perseverance. Pushing past the no’s. Pushing past the individuals who thought I should be something else. I started this work with zero experience, but my passion for helping entrepreneurs and existing skillset have allowed me to start contributing quickly. My dream, and now my legacy, is listening to someone tell me about what they’re building and finding a way to support that effort. I continue to not only push for change but also be the change that others are looking for.


Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Zane Venture Fund is a $25M fund investing in diverse entrepreneurs who are creating tech-enabled solutions. Primarily in the Southeast. Our mantra is “leave no entrepreneur behind.” We believe every entrepreneur has something to offer and we want to foster that innovation. Providing access to capital, knowledge, networks, and mentors will give founders the tools they need to be successful. Our programming arm and sister company, Zane Access, offers several ways for diverse entrepreneurs to engage with us through our capital readiness cohort, the She Conquers Capital podcast, and Zane Access University programming for student entrepreneurs. We believe that the Zane team is perfectly suited to give a 360 approach to the entrepreneurs in our care.


Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is full of great spots to wine, dine, shop! One of my favorite restaurants is Taqueria del Sol, a local Mexican restaurant that is one of the best in the city (IMO)! For drinks, I like going to the Battery at Suntrust, finding a cool bar, and sitting there to people watch. It’s always great to take a stroll around Piedmont Park and their Farmers Market is awesome!


Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sig Mosley is one of the most prolific investors in the Southeast and he took me under his wings, became a mentor, advisor, and now venture partner. He gave me credibility in venture capital when others wouldn’t give me a return call. I appreciate his steady and easygoing manner, and his ability to always see great investment deals.
