We had the good fortune of connecting with Caroline Marshall Hill AKA c.hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caroline Marshall Hill, what do you attribute your success to?
Success can be defined in so many different ways. To me, success is continuing to create on a daily basis while maintaining a healthy and strong relationship with my partner. I have no aspirations of becoming rich and famous. Within that definition of success, I have found that you should only take on projects that excite you. It shows in the work. Whether it be a commission or a personal project, it has to be something that means something to you and stirs you in some way. The more compromises you make, the harder it is to stay on track. It’s important to create a large body of work that speaks clearly in your voice, satisfying the things you want to address with your art. Projects looking for similar solutions will follow.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am so grateful to get to do what I love for a living. Painting and drawing is so essential to me. Making a career out of it wasn’t easy but it was obvious. Love, nature and interconnectedness inspire me. All of your experiences are poured into each project. Every book you read, every kiss you make, every person you meet. This galvanizes me! Even if it’s not a conscious thought or a part of the concept, it’s in the work. The thought that this collection of experiences only continues to grow is thrilling to me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m sorry to say that I haven’t been to Atlanta since I was a kid. I’m down in New Orleans. Brocato’s for dessert. Frenchmen Street for music. City Park for the Oaks. The Marigny for the houses. The Mississippi River. Parkway for Poboys. The Galley for seafood. Effervescence for swank.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to give a shoutout to my partner, Sara Gozalo. She is integral in setting the stage for me to create everyday. Sara works hard for community and is a constant source of inspiration. I’m one lucky girl!
