We had the good fortune of connecting with Lulu Fall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lulu, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I have many affirmations and beliefs, but my favorite affirmation would have to be: BE HERE NOW. Not only do I have anxiety, the arts industry is designed to have you constantly thinking about the future: the next project, the next audition, the next gig, etc. This affirmation allows me to stay grounded, focused and clear. This business is both beautiful and ruthless–if you don’t have a strong sense of who you are, where you are and what your focus is, it is very easy for the industry to sweep you up, making you lose yourself. Arts industry aside, the affirmation “Be Here Now” allows me to remain calm and clear. Especially in the midst of the pandemic, where it’s safe to say that just about everyone’s mental and emotional states have been compromised in some way, this affirmation helps to stay in the moment, stay grateful, and ultimately take all things one step at a time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Firstly, what sets me apart are two things: my versatility and the fact that I’m an underdog. As I got older and dove deeper into the world of the arts, I hit many roadblocks: trying to understand/control my instrument; self-sabotaging tendencies; finding my artistic voice, to name a few. I was my worst critic and got in my own way too many times to count (including almost flunking out of the music department my freshman year in college). Hard work, perseverance and determination were my hand-holders throughout my professional career (and still are). Because I’ve hit quite a few brick walls, I’ve learned how to get up, stay up and push harder to reach the the next level. Drive and versatility has allowed me to dive deep into a performing and recording music career as well as an acting career, and many things in between. I want the masses to know that having a goal, knowing who you are inside and out, and surrounding yourself with likeminded friends are recipes for success, especially in this industry.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love itineraries! I am new to the Detroit area, but if I had friends visiting, my itinerary would be as follows: Breakfast: Toast (fantastic breakfast/brunch eatery); Lunch: Detroit Vegan Soul (black-owned goodness for the soul); Museum: Charles H Wright Museum of African American History; Cocktails: The Sugar House; Dinner: La Dolce Vita

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Firstly, I have to shoutout my parents. Since I was a kid, I exhibited keen interest in the arts. My parents were the ones who enrolled me in arts classes, took me to rehearsals on early Saturday mornings, and watched me flourish. I will forever be grateful to them because they invested, and continue to invest in me. They told me to dive in, try things and be happy, and I love them especially for that. Secondly, and a close second at that, I have to shoutout my fiancé and best friend Kris Johnson. He is my biggest cheerleader, and is always ready and willing to bounce artistic ideas back and forth and nudge me out of my comfort zone. When I doubt myself or hit a roadblock, Kris is always there to shine a mirror on me and tell me to keep going. My college mentors Sunny Wilkinson (voice teacher) and Derrick Gardner (trumpet professor) gave me tough love, told me to listen to my voice and dare to be different. And I’m so thankful for that sound advice!
