We had the good fortune of connecting with Caylee Robillard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caylee, how do you define success?
I think success is incredibly personal, and I’ve found that if you try and compare success to people around you, it’s easy to get discouraged. Defining success and understanding what it means to you makes it easier to find fulfillment in what you do. For me, success is deeply connected to happiness. If I am creating work that I’m proud of, and getting to spend time doing what I love – that’s where I find profound happiness. I feel as if I am happy, that I am also successful – regardless of money, title, or accolades.
Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’ve been a live music photographer for about 3 years now, and it’s truly my belief that live music is the closest thing to magic that we’ve in this world. There is no feeling quite like seeing your favorite band live, and being able to feel the music in your bones. The opportunity to capture that feeling in a photograph that lives forever is my greatest privilege in life. I’ve learned that if there’s something in your life that really sets your soul on fire, that you should pursue it relentlessly. There’s a quote by Charles Bukowski that talks about going into the arts, and it ends with the sentiment of, “You will get an enormous reward, you will have created something.” And that is what it’s all about for me, I am so passionate about creating a memory through of photograph that can relay the energy and magic of live music.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is such a vibrant city. Most of my favorite spots around the are some of the concert venues – if you want to catch a show, be sure to check out the Masquerade, Center Stage, and the Drunken Unicorn. Piedmont Park is another spot that is great to explore! And, definitely grab a bite to eat at Fellini’s Pizza! There’s also a super cool drive-in movie theater called the Starlight. There’s always plenty of incredible stuff to do around the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandfather really sparked my interest and love for photography. He was constantly behind the lens when I was growing up. He is my greatest inspiration in all aspects of my life, but he showed me the true value of hard work, following your dreams, and passion.
