We had the good fortune of connecting with Indigo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Indigo, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My ultimate career goal is to become a significant and respected influence in the independent music world. I want to be the person artists aspire to connect with, known for having a high standard and a discerning ear for music. Beyond that, I aim to create lasting opportunities for networking and collaboration within the independent music industry—a space where artists and professionals can come together to grow and thrive. I want my name to symbolize excellence and integrity in the music world, someone whose stamp of approval truly means something.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
R1 Records and Unheard Sessions were born out of my deep passion for independent artistry and my desire to create spaces where untapped talent can thrive. R1 Records isn’t just a record label—it’s a movement dedicated to elevating independent artists who have a message to share. What sets us apart is our commitment to exclusivity and authenticity. We aim to redefine success in the music industry by creating opportunities for artists to grow while staying true to themselves.

Unheard Sessions complements this mission as a platform for showcasing voices that deserve to be heard. The podcast highlights the unique stories and journeys of independent artists, shedding light on the raw talent and determination that often go unnoticed.

Getting to where I am today hasn’t been easy. Building a business in such a competitive industry has come with countless challenges—from navigating limited resources to earning trust and respect in a space that values experience and connections. I’ve learned to overcome these obstacles by staying focused on my vision and leaning into the support of my community. It’s also taught me to be resilient, resourceful, and to embrace the power of collaboration.

One of the lessons I’ve learned along the way is the importance of authenticity. When you stay true to your values and your “why,” it attracts the right people and opportunities. I’ve also learned that success isn’t about how quickly you achieve something; it’s about the impact you create.

What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built with artists and the fact that I’ve created spaces where they feel seen, heard, and empowered. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching someone step into their potential and knowing you played a small part in their journey.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about R1 Records and Unheard Sessions, it’s that we’re here to make a difference. We’re not chasing trends or numbers—we’re building a legacy that champions the underdog and puts artistry first. My story is one of faith, perseverance, and a refusal to settle for mediocrity. I want to be known as someone who used their voice and platform to uplift others, and I hope my work inspires others to do the same.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting, I’d make sure they experienced the best of both Albany and Macon, Georgia—two places close to my heart.

Starting in Albany, I’d take them to my all-time favorite restaurant, Blackbeard’s, for some amazing food. We’d also visit Turtle Grove Park to see the Ray Charles Plaza, where they can enjoy the beautiful tribute to one of the city’s greatest legends. It’s such a peaceful spot and a great way to pay respect to his legacy.

In Macon, there’s so much to see, do, and enjoy. We’d visit the Otis Redding Foundation and the Otis Redding Center for the Arts to honor the incredible music legacy of Otis Redding. We’d also stop by the Tubman Museum, The Douglass Theatre, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. Each of these spots offers a unique glimpse into Macon’s history, culture, and creativity.

For food, I’d take them to some of my favorite places: Saleem’s Fish Supreme, Mother’s Breakfast & BBQ, Greenwood BBQ, Papouli’s Mediterranean Cafe and Market, Medi’s Mediterranean Fusion Restaurant, JJ Fish & Chicken, Kinjo, Osaka, Brassiere Circa, Cathedral Coffee, SUMO, and Rock N Roll Sushi. Each of these spots offers something special, whether it’s soul food, Mediterranean flavors, or sushi with a twist.

If we’re exploring Macon’s nightlife, we’d definitely stop by VIBEZ – Brunch, Bar, & Grill, and Apt 77. For a more relaxed vibe, we’d visit Hotel Forty Five and enjoy a meal or drink at Loom. If we want a beautiful view with a bit of sophistication, we’d head to Hightales Rooftop Bar for cocktails while taking in the city skyline.

Whether it’s enjoying local history, indulging in amazing food, or soaking up the nightlife, this itinerary would guarantee an unforgettable week!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to several key people and groups who have been instrumental in my journey. First and foremost, my parents, brother, and family—your unwavering support has been the foundation of everything I’ve been able to achieve. You’ve always believed in my dreams, even when they seemed impossible, and that kind of love and encouragement has carried me through my toughest moments. I’m so blessed to have you as my backbone.

To my first artists, Trïbe, I owe you a special thank you. You were the first to take a chance on me, trusting me to support your vision and guide your dreams as artists. Your belief in me gave me the confidence to believe in myself and my purpose. You have a permanent place in my heart, and I’ll always be grateful for the bond we’ve built.

To Sabir Muhammad, Vinson Muhammad, and the entire Cluth team, thank you for giving me a seat at the table. You welcomed me into your space, allowed me to grow, and encouraged me to spread my wings. Your support has helped me evolve into the professional I am today, and I am endlessly grateful for the opportunities you’ve given me.

I also want to thank Mrs. Karla Redding-Andrews, Justin Andrews, and the entire Otis Redding Foundation for welcoming me into your space. You’ve shown me kindness, support, and inspiration that I will never forget. Your family’s legacy is one I deeply admire, and your belief in me has been a blessing.

To my close friends—Naseem Muhammad, Nadiyah Wilmore, Cierra Clark, Jalen Collier, Jordon Gaynor, Cole Crook, Telan Rucker, and Tierney Hamer—you all have been my constant source of strength, love, and encouragement. From day one, you’ve shown up for me in ways that I’ll always cherish. Whether you’re in the room cheering me on or sending your support from afar, I always feel your love. You’ve stood by me through every challenge and triumph, and I am beyond grateful to have such a loyal, loving, and inspiring circle of friends. Each of you holds a special place in my heart, and I don’t take your presence in my life for granted.

And above all, I want to give thanks to God. Without Him, none of this would be possible. His grace has guided me every step of the way, and I am humbled and blessed to be on this journey with His support.
