Meet Ben Mccoy | Owner of Burnt By Da Beard Pyrography

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Mccoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ben, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It kind of happened by accident. It originally was just a hobby that I did for fun and every now and again I would have someone reach out and want a custom piece done. But back in 2019 I was shot 7 times while attempting to prevent a mass shooting and was unable to work so a shifted my focus towards turning my hobby into more of an actual business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Burnt by Da Beard started off with me and a cheap woodburning iron doing things for fun. Over the years my focus shifted towards the art of fractal burning and lichtenberg patterns. It’s a bit of a taboo practice due to the high level of risk and dangers of working with high voltage electricity, so it’s not a very common form of woodburning. But after surviving 7 gunshots, I decided to start living life knowing we aren’t promised tomorrow and taking risks rather than “playing it safe”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely check out some of the local Newnan watering holes, specifically RPM and the Alamo. A night out on the town in Atlanta would definitely be a must as well. Grabbing a bite to eat at the Vortex, catching a concert at the Tabernacle, and indulging in some debauchery at the Clairemont Lounge would definitely be on the agenda.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unwavering love and support from my mother. She has always stood behind me and supported my dreams and endeavors while also pushing me to take chances and try new things.
