We had the good fortune of connecting with Zindzi Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zindzi, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
I strongly dislike the idea that you have to overwork yourself to achieve your goals. I think everything is about your perspective and mindset. And if you believe that things have to be hard for you before they get better, then that’s what it will be. I believe in balance in all aspects of your life. And hustle culture just seems like another way to neglect yourself and your needs. It’s a way to give yourself a feeling of fake security to soothe your insecurities.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a girl who has always felt unseen and in the background and through my art I’m fighting the fear of being seen and letting people meet me through my music. I’ve always felt like I was forgotten in different spaces at home, school, or work. I’ve silenced myself too many times and let other people outshine me, so my art is kind of a radical movement for me because I’m letting people see me physically and emotionally through performing and releasing music. And my music touches on these subjects in my life. I’m still a new artist, so I haven’t reached the successful side yet, but I will be releasing my first body of work soon in a couple of weeks. It’s an EP called Growing Pains. It touches on growing up and the experiences that came with that for me
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Um little fives points is nice, good for young people. Anywhere in midtown is nice too. I’m from the suburbs so I’m not very familiar with downtown atl.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to say my family. They have always been my rock and emotional support through everything I do. I wouldn’t be where I am in life without any of them.
