We had the good fortune of connecting with Shekina Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shekina, what are you inspired by?

I am inspired by my life experiences and my relationship with God as well as experiences from others. My daily life and everything that God has kept me from and blessed me with inspires a song out of me. I’m learning more and more as I go about this musical journey to be more in tune with the lyrics and tunes that God gives me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music really is a mix of old school and new school. This being my first debut album I wanted to really tell my story and introduce who I am through this project. I have definitely not arrived. I am still learning everyday lessons in this music industry and the blessing is I have people in my corner who have my best interest at heart and have no problem telling me how it is. I am most excited about where God is taking this journey and the amount of success, we have achieved in such a short window of time. Overcoming the challenges becomes easier when you have real people in your corner to make sure you stay on track. I want the world to have an experience of God’s presence when listening to my music and of course the ultimate goal is to build His kingdom song by song.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend is coming in town…I would definitely take them to downtown Detroit to experience the Detroit River which happens to be my favorite spot. I would take them to a few great food spots in Metro Detro surrounding areas. If they are coming in the summer maybe some iconic places that make Detroit what it is and then bring them to my church GEI Greater Emmanuel Institutional COGIC where I serve.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a lot of people who made me who I am today and are still helping me to grow on a daily. I want to shout out my parents (the late Bishop James Whitehead Jr. & Lady Mollie Whitehead) who definitely sacrificed and cultivated me to be where I am. Also my Aunt Labarbara Whitehead, my mentor and teacher Mo. Bettye Ranson Nelson, my spiritual leaders Bishop J Drew Sheard and Lady Karen Clark Sheard, Dr. Dorinda Clark Cole, Dr. Judith Christie McAllister, my team (Caleb Foster my husband, Sonya Miller, Serenity Traylor, my producers Ernest Tolbert and LaDell Abrams) and even my circle of friends who have played a part in my development and still is to this day. I’m forever grateful.
