We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephen, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to be an artist because I love music. Each chord, each melody, each phrase, each rudiment is a language. That language can speak to, and help inspire someone I’ve never met. Those emotions bring us all one step closer to God’s love. No matter the triumph, or tribulation; as a creative, it is our calling to positively impact others, educate the next generation, and shine our collective light to uplift the beauty of humanity. That in itself is pretty cool, and a lot of fun.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most recently I would have to say the loss of my parents, Rosa & Stephen Smith I. My Uncle John Reece, and my Cousin, Nick Collier have been challenges for me personally. The lesson I would say I learned is to cherish everyone as much as you can while they are here on earth. Each of them taught me so much about life, being a man, music, sports….just everything you can think of.

I want people to recognize that I perform, and play my horn with every fiber of my being no matter what the stage. My brand represents what I like to call, “Passionate Enjoyment,” for all ages. I connect with my audiences and fans because I believe my music is good for the soul. That is something that anyone can be a part of.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Man oh man 😄 well that depends on the city I’m performing in, but I will answer that by beginning at home in Dayton, Ohio. I would take them to Oregon District downtown, or a Dayton Dragons professional baseball game.

If I’m in Montgomery, Alabama, I would take them to The Alabama State University. My school!

If we’re in Augusta, Georgia, we are definitely hitting Broad Street which is downtown, and check out the James Brown statue.

We can shoot over to Atlanta and visit downtown, or Georgia Aquarium.

On the next interview I’ll tell you about fun spots in New York, Miami, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, New Orleans, a bunch of cities…..yeah I could go on and on (laughs)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Giving honor to God, who is the head of my life. My beautiful wife, Ashley. My amazing sister, Savannah. My supportive family. Every teacher I’ve had the privilege of learning from, along with every musician. My friends. They have all played a significant role in the love and development of Stephen “Saxee” Smith.
