Meet Crystal Wells | Home Fragrance Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Wells and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Crystal, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to bring candle lovers and home décor enthusiasts a better option for scenting their home. I love luxury candles but can’t always justify the price. I wanted to bring the feeling of a luxury home fragrance experience to people but take away the luxury price tag.

What should our readers know about your business?
I have been in business for two years now. Black Kindle Candles is currently a one woman operation. I funded the business myself and initially started making candles on my kitchen stove. I am now in my own candle studio in Baltimore Maryland. I pride myself on crafting uniquely scented products that offer a quiet luxury feel and really fill a room.
It has not been easy at all. Finding effective ways to promote the company has been vital. I have found a great community on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. I learned early on that being myself and being vulnerable is the best way to build consumer trust and interest.
Lessons learned along the way are that it’s ok to be inspired by what others are doing but never get consumed by it. Comparison is the thief of happiness. Find your own lane and ride it home.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am from Baltimore Maryland. The city and surrounding area offers an endless list of things to do. I would start at one of my favorite breakfast spot Miss Shirley’s. Located near the inner harbor, the drinks are A1 and shrimp and grits are an easy yes. While downtown we could see some local musicians performing right near the pier and grab cocktails and lunch at The Four Seasons. We are known for our crab cakes and one of my favorite places for crab cakes is little spot called the Hazlewood Inn. For some culture a visit to the Reginal F. Lewis Museum followed by dinner at EJJI, my favorite ramen spot.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Black Candle Makers Club (BCMC) has been an amazing resource to me. Starting out as a new candle maker was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. You might be surprised at how little resources and tutorials there are for candle makers. I had to start from the ground up but Facebook groups like BCMC really helped me with understanding the process of formulating, designing and selling candles.
