We had the good fortune of connecting with Rita Brent and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rita, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted creative freedom and financial freedom. Though I’ve enjoyed the stability of working for someone else in the past, it did not provide me the liberty I desired to thrive completely as a creative.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a musician. Began playing drums and singing at the age of 8. Joined the Army National Guard Band at 18. Today, I am a performing artists and working musician.
I began doing standup comedy in 2013. I met Rickey Smiley in 2016 and began touring with him. I met Cedric the Entertainer in 2019 and began touring with him. Both legends of comedy are my mentors. Aside from touring with them, I headline my own comedy tour across America.
I am a comedy writer. This is a new realm. I’ve written for the EMMY Awards, the Academy of Country Music Awards and others.
I got where I am today by old fashioned work ethic and showing a lot of resilience. My single key to success is operating with pure intentions and not quitting in the face of challenges. When I’m gone I want the world to know that I gave my all in pursuit of my true purpose… to bring joy and healing through artistry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m new to Atlanta, but I am in love with Ponce City Market. I consider it a one stop shop for eating, people-watching, shopping small, and experiencing nature. After moving from New York, I became a big fan of ramen. Okiboru in Sandy Springs is my go-to spot for ramen. Atlanta is so full of culture, you can literally fall upon a good hang out spot unplanned. Just have a good playlist ready because you WILL be in traffic at some point. No way around it!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my mother for guiding and protecting me until I was able to walk on my own two feet. Now it’s my turn to support her.
