Meet Sharnell James | Mental Health and Self-Care Advocate

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharnell James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharnell, how does your business help the community?
Dear Self Care was created in 2017 as a blog to shed light on the importance of mental health and self-care within the Black community. Since I have transformed it into a business, I can confidently say that Dear Self Care is a needed tool within the Black community as I am here to eradicate the stigma around mental health. So far, I provided a safe space for people to express how they are feeling along with tips and tricks to cope with what they might be feeling internal.
I recently launched the Dear Self Care Volume 1 Journals as a means to assist in promoting self-care. To purchase, follow the link to our website to grab your own!

What should our readers know about your business?
I specialize in helping millennials overcome their mental health struggles by providing self-care strategies, tips, and a safe space. I like to believe that I am different than most business owners because I have a story behind it. I went through a tough time and created something great for myself as well as those around me. I am so proud of how far I have come with Dear Self Care. I had times when I doubted myself, but I look back on all the things that I have done thus far and just smile because I really did it! I want readers to know that I am here to talk about mental health and self-care. If you’d like for me to speak at an event, I do have a website for you to book as well as purchase my journal or a self-care challenge.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So, I am originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan but moved to the metro-Detroit area in 2018. My best friends are always trying to come down to visit and try new things. We would first grab dinner from Sedona Taphouse in Troy since that has become our favorite spot for when they come into town. I have discovered some new bar spots downtown Detroit that we would try together. To name a few the Candy Bar and the Valentine Vodka Distillery. Then, we would take some time to explore downtown to find more bars/lounges for us to enjoy our nights.
Aside from visiting new places, we are all homebodies lol so ordering take out and grabbing a few bottles of wine is always the move for us. That gives us the ability to catch up with one another as well as relax!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this article to my late grandmother, Valerie Patrick, and grandfather, Woodrow Moore. These two people are the motivation behind everything that I do as I always want to make them proud. Unfortunately, they are not here to be physical witnesses to my success but I know they are watching me with a smile on their faces.
