We had the good fortune of connecting with Kala Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kala, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

I’ve always had a strong passion for the arts and decided in my Freshman year of high school that I wanted to pursue a career in Interior Design. From there, I went on to receive my B.F.A. in Interior Design from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and a minor in Architectural history.

Graduating in the Spring of 2020, COVID-19 served its fair share of challenges that I’m sure everyone can relate to. Corporations were resending job offers due to the virus’ uncertainty and I didn’t want to rely solely on them to jump-start my career. It was at that time I decided to take a huge risk and launch my own design business, Minima, formally known as KL Designs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Thank you!! I provide quality design services for both residential and commercial clients. From conceptual design consultations to full-service product selection, I ensure that my clients are left with a space they’re happy to call their own. What sets me apart from others is the way that I’m able to merge my design style with my client’s design style and create something we both love. Art is subjective, so I enjoy making each project unique and reflective of the individual I’m creating for.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots in the city is the rooftop of Ponce City Market. I also recommend the Garden Room for brunch or dinner. I recently celebrated my 25th birthday there and the food, ambiance, and service were amazing!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my parents, Larry + Vivian, my brother Jamaal, and all of my friends and family who proudly promote my business! From sharing my projects, referring me to new clients, and informing me about other business opportunities, their support means the world to me!! Without them, Minima wouldn’t be what it is today!
