We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooklyn Maxey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooklyn, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Honestly I have two! 1) When I let go of everything and focussed solely on Boudoir, thats when my business took flight. 2) When I decided that I couldn’t juggle everything as much as I wanted too and hired a team. My business grew even more and those two things tie hand in hand for why my business has continued to thrive. I’m so thankful!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Hello, my name is Brooklyn and I was born and raised near Athens, Ga. My first encounter with photography makes me smile. I have pictures of myself around 6 years old with a pink Barbie polaroid camera, that I still have to this day! I knew then that it was my absolute favorite thing to do. At age 11 I started taking photos of children that I would baby sit. Their parents would pay me for babysitting and separately for the photos. This encouraged me to keep practicing what I loved to do most, photograph people.
When I was 22 and a single mom, I was living with my parents and taking every interview that I could . None were related to photography. My dad looked me in the eyes and said ” Brooklyn, is this what you want to do? is this your dream?” When I said no, he said ” Then why are you doing it? You need to follow your passion and your talents that God has given you. If it’s photography, thats what you need to be doing.” So, I did… I pushed doing photography full time and It is the best advice I ever have received and followed
Boudoir photography is a sensitive, emotional and beautiful expression of art . I personally feel like when I connect emotionally with my client, I am able to master their session in a way they didn’t even know they needed yet. Boudoir is absolutely a mind set and each client has a different reason they are shooting or a different need that they want from the session. Asking them personal questions has really helped me bring to life a deeper purpose behind the image they are seeing.
I’m thankful to have recently been able to design my own studio on the property I live on. I have two rooms, a garden room and a moody room. We also just added an outdoor shower! Once I talk to my client and get a feel for the aesthetic they like, I will check the lingerie pieces they brought during hair and makeup. Then I will place each piece out around the room where I think it will go cohesively. We try to get as many poses in each outfit as two hours will allow. Then at the end of the session I scroll through my camera to make sure I have an even amount of body , detailed , posed, candid, and headshots before ending the session.
Photography for me, means that I have the opportunity to change how a women views herself and potentially change her life. What I believe to make a woman beautiful, is her soul. Who we are on the inside is where we find our worth and that is where beauty starts. However this is what women such as myself, struggle with every single day. Where does my worth come from? Am I beautiful? A boudoir session can open your eyes to see yourself in a light you may have never experienced before. My passion is to photograph all ages of women no mater color, shape, or size. I learn and am inspired by each woman I photograph, because everyone is so unique. Though I only photograph boudoir ages 18+ I still love to open my studio on prom days. My makeup artist Kelseajmua will do the hair and makeup and I take their pictures in their prom dresses. I think ages 14 + it is imperative to show them that they are beautiful and instill positivity in them because this is such a difficult age. They are the future and we have the opportunity empower them from the start. Empowered women, empower women.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Downtown athens is one of my favorite places to spend my time. One of my personal favorite places to eat is called The Place, Their food is so yummy and I love that you can eat upstairs near the windows and overlook the town. The Georgia theater has the perfect place to listen to your favorite singer until late at night and then you can go get the best cookies after from insomnia cookies. SO GOOD. Downtown is perfect if you want to take pictures or take a long walk on campus and see pretty landscapes, You can’t go wrong here.
