We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Ticking and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Initially my thought process was centered solely around helping kids with reading. Eventually, it morphed into so much more! What’s known now as Up-GradEDU, was formally known as Supplemental Learning-Birmingham when I began 6.5 years ago. One day while I was subbing for a local school, I noticed that students were struggling with the basics. That same day, I created a flyer and began tutoring at local libraries the following Saturday. Things took off from there. I’ve tutored over 100 students so far. I’ve also taught adults as well. I currently tutor all subjects, multiple grade levels, and I also teach etiquette courses.

What should our readers know about your business?
Up-GradEDU is 100% dedicated to the improvement of struggling students. Since the start of the pandemic, virtual learning has become the new normal. Tutoring via Zoom allows parents more flexibility with scheduling, and students the luxury of learning in the comfort of their own home. I offer etiquette courses for our youth as well. I focus on manners, sportsmanship, public behavior, professionalism, and bullying prevention. There aren’t many inexpensive charm schools around, I’m trying to change that.

Along the way, I’ve learned that change is good. Learning new ways of doing things is great. I’ve gotten to where I am by adjusting when needed, listening to the needs of parents, and focusing on those needs.

I am so appreciative of all of the recurring clients I have! Their reviews and referrals have helped me stay in business for nearly 7 years!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great question! Our itinerary would most likely include: Grilling out, a waterfall, nature trails, happy hour, movies, and a spa day! I love Woodhouse Day Spa.

You can’t go wrong with happy hour and good food lol. I love to cook. I don’t really have a restaurant in mind. I love to relax and have a good time! Any spot that offers that is a win in my eyes!

When it comes to nature, parks, trails, and waterfalls…There are so many hidden gems in Alabama. So many beautiful spots to just relax and unwind. Turkey Creek Nature Preserve is one of the best spots for that!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God deserves the ultimate shoutout! I am so blessed to be able to use my gifts for good in our community. I ask God for guidance in everything. He leads me.

My aunt Brenda has been a huge supporter! I’ve accomplished so much with her by my side! My other family members, friends, and business associates are next!

With the support of family, friends, and community we’ve been able to host a food drive, a meet and greet, and a free etiquette event for our youth! I’ve received monetary donations, as well as office supplies from my community! I’m so thankful! I’m nothing without their support.

Last, but certainly not least…THE PARENTS who have given me the opportunity to teach their little ones, deserve a shoutout for sure. I’m happy to be apart of their village. I’m so blessed to have clients who love and trust me! I love them as well!
