We had the good fortune of connecting with Rashaad Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rashaad, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Art is an element that is not viewed in the same light as science or technology. Needless to say, that there are not as many resources available to artists and designers as it compares to aspiring doctors and tech. Our vision is to create an organization that advocates for creatives in the realms of fashion and art by providing mentorship, funding, and other opportunities to advance their careers.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The Burghàlie Academy of Visual Arts is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for young creatives in the realms of fashion and art by providing funding , education, and other resources that are essential for the development of artistry. I would have to say one moment that I am most proud of is the Burghàlie Resort Fashion Show & Silent Auction. This was an independent designer showcase to raise funds for children in the Georgia foster care system. The fashion show consisted of a very talented designer line up, with the most notable designer being Alani Taylor. The brand has created designs for Beyonce, Cardi B, and many more.
I feel that the biggest challenge for our organization was figuring out what works for us. Understanding what makes us unique and standing on that idea. This was a challenge, but through consistency and dedication anyone can get the desired results.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love outdoor activities, so I would plan to go swim at a local waterfall. Maybe the Roswell Water Mill. For food options, I love Caribbean and Indian cuisines. In my opinion, any club on Edgewood is ideal for going out or grabbing drinks.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my business partner Brandon. He has shared an abundance of knowledge that has furthered my growth in logistics, credit, and overall business operations.
