We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivy Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ivy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I was first thought of becoming an entrepreneur I knew I wanted to create something that represented what I love and something that could improve someone ‘s quality of life. I have always enjoyed making a positive impact on others, and I wanted whatever I was going to create to be special , yet significant. Self- Care is a thing a lot people overlook , mostly because it sometimes requires what a lot of people don’t feel they have- time. The goal with Balanced Babes is to create a line of products and self-love centered events where women ,just like me, can have access to easy forms  and practices of self care.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Although I hope to have Balanced Babes be my full-time career, and my sole source of income one day, I do currently work a regular 9-5! I am currently a Paraprofessional at a behavioral health school, where I help assist with improving and/or correcting behavioral health issues that help aid students into their transition back to public school settings. I absolutely love my job and it’s definitely preparing me for what I want to do with my degree. I am currently also in school as well- I am a junior at Oakland University studying in the field of Social Work, and will be graduating pretty soon. This journey of finishing school has been a long one, but I wouldn’t change a things. There’s beauty in the struggle, and sometimes when you have to work for things harder than the average person, you appreciate it just a little more. There elusive been days where I wanted to give up, and days where I thought I just couldn’t do it anymore, but I am so grateful for the strength that I had to push through. Once I graduate, I hope to have the opportunity to serve as a social worker within a girls group home, or working in a facility similar to my current employer.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much to do and so many great places to eat in the city of Detroit, but some of my favorite restaurants would be Penny Reds (they have amazing chicken and biscuits), Hop Cat, Condado (they have the best tacos ever!), and Sevà (great option for anyone of my girls who happen to be vegan/vegetarian!) . As far as hangout spots, we can go for a walk downtown to shop and sightsee , a walk along Detroit Riverfront , go to Trust for a cute brunch turn up, or maybe even do some bar hopping along Woodward, where there are a lot of cool bars, arcades and activities for the girls! A weekend in the D comes with endless activities and fun, so we would never run out of things to do!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to dedicate my Shoutout to my whole tribe- from my grandmother, my aunt, my boyfriend, my sister & my three best-friends; They all deserve the world and then some. All these people constantly pour into me and never let me forget that the sky is the limit. It’s such a blessing to have a group of people, family, that genuinely want the best for you and take each step of the journey beside you with a heart full of love not far behind. I’m forever grateful.
