We had the good fortune of connecting with Keyanna Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keyanna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business developed at a very young age. I was always the leader in every aspect of my life, whether it was group assignments in class or the neighborhood double dutch or dance team. Everyone always looked to me for guidance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My brand is a celebration of overcoming the many hardships we may face in life and looking good while doing so. The name Grow & Glo represents “growing” through challenges and moving past them, that’s the “glo.” I sat on the idea for two years due to fear and worrying about not having enough time to run a business. I finally launched on 6/1/2019 as a graduation gift to myself and I’ve been on “go mode” ever since. I started my business while working 10 hours a day, doing a 4 hour internship and being enrolled in college full time but that didn’t hinder my success and that’s what I’m most proud of. I was able to reach this amount of success through hard work and dedication. It wasn’t easy, but my passion outweighs the long nights any day. I’ve learned to make time for self care, because if I’m not okay Grow & Glo can’t flourish. I want the world to know that hardships are nothing but growing experiences, preparing you for your glo up!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in one of the most face-paced cities in the world. Welcome to New York City! Some of my favorite spots are Rustik Tavern, Skinny’s Cantina and Blend On The Water for brunch. When it’s time for dinner, you have to visit Lemongrass Grill or get takeout from Top Tier Catering. I’m a foodie, so all of the spots listed pass the vibe and grub check! If you were to visit in the spring or summer time, definitely visit our first restaurant on a boat La Barca, great tacos and margaritas while enjoying a boat ride.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my uncle Kenny for teaching me how to make my own designs and cut out the middle man! With his guidance and even allowing me to use his machine until I got my own, I was able to make EVERY piece on my own just a month after launching in 2019. I’d also like to shoutout my mother for gifting me my own machine and my father for instilling that “hustler” spirit in me!
