We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Hylton and Nakia Starling of Accent Minded Designs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica and Nakia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Many are often driven by risk-taking. Risks involve the willingness to pursue a vision through both challenges and success experienced. Those willing to accept risks are most adaptable with managing change and pivoting when needed.
“Discomfort is always a necessary part of enlightenment.”- by Pearl Cleage; is a quote often reminded of when considering impactful decisions. Knowing risk and resilience coincide with one another has significantly contributed to both personal and professional decision-making.
In essence, life is about continuous progression and development. Whether you’re seeking to evolve individually, professionally, spiritually, financially, etc. It’s essential to step beyond what’s most comfortable or familiar to obtain a desired goal.
Risk taking has been a contributing factor to several pivotal milestones throughout life. Transitioning career fields and relocating to a new State/City have presented many amazing opportunities and experiences, which have continued to individually broaden our cu
For these reasons, risks have undoubtedly attributed to both personal/ professional growth and success.
What should our readers know about your business?
Accent Minded Designs, LLC was established in 2018. We are a team of 2 experienced event planners providing event planning services in Charlotte.
We have since expanded our network and services in surrounding areas, including Atlanta.
Starting out as just a love for entertaining and hosting social gatherings with family and friends, we were encouraged by many to share our talents beyond our loved ones. With our attention to detail, creativity, and love for all occasions to celebrate; Accent Minded Designs was formed.
Recognizing there are no limits in the creative space inspired our vision as design creators. Exploring design styles, use of patterns, and color palettes has contributed to our ability to broaden visual concepts.
We pride ourselves in relationship-building and developing a network among small business owners. In doing so, we have built a catalog of preferred vendors and long-standing relationships. Collaboration with industry partners has been a key strength as we focus on continued growth within our company.
In addition, building confidence between clients has been instrumental in our success. Customizing the planning process tailored to individual client’s needs, allows us to create a valuable experienc
With growing a business and brand, we have come to find that each phase requires a great deal of demanded time and dedication to reach and maintain long-term success. Pr
The biggest lesson overall was learning to adjust due to challenges faced during the global pandemic. Unfortunately, we all experienced the impact in some way.
As business owners, we learned to reset and strategize in outlining our approach toward maintaining business. Recognizing at any moment things can easily change, we have learned the importance to adapt in uncomfortability.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Firstly, God. Knowing that He has a purpose for every individual’s life. Having faith, allowed us to fully trust our decision in stepping out to fulfill our destined gifts and talents. We are confident in knowing that our determination to start a business is purpose fulfilled.
Leading to the launch of Accent Minded Designs, we recognized there’s an evolving space and need for event management. Beginning with hosting events for friends and family, we would often be asked for décor and event planning advice. Their support inspired our vision as design creatives.
We would like to thank those individuals who have encouraged us from the beginning.
