We had the good fortune of connecting with Tasheina Canty-White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tasheina, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
I am the mother of two sons, ages 13 &14. They’ve seen me manage my photography, my music, and education career. My prayer is that in all they see me do, they can reflect on my tenacity and will to persevere through any situation. I pray they learn from me how to celebrate the highs and keep hope through the low points. Most of all, I hope that I have shown them that their value is not determined by their circumstances, but how they respond and show up for whatever comes their way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While I teach music on a daily basis, I am also a singer, writer and photographer. I am most proud that I have reached a point where every job I have is a directly related to my gifts. Proverbs 18:16 declares that a person’s gifts makes room for them and brings them into the presence of greatness. I don’t sing, write, or take pictures to be great. I do it because they give me life. These gifts fuel me. That’s how I know I was created to do what I do. Getting here was not easy. It wasn’t until I switched my major to music that I began to find joy. However, it still wasn’t easy. After graduation, I needed a job. I spent 5 years just working to have a job. However, I believe all things work together for good to them who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose, as written in Romans 8:28. That job helped to shape me as an educator and still impacts how I relate to people today. Today, as I teach, write, or shoot photography, I let people know to be okay with where they are and to learn the lesson that is intended for that season. Paul said in Philippians 4:12, ” I know how to get along and live humbly [in difficult times], and I also know how to enjoy abundance and live in prosperity. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret [of facing life], whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need. ”

The message I want to share with everyone about my story is to find your constant. People and circumstances change. Find what keeps you stable and stand on that promise. For me, on Christ the solid rock I stand. All other ground is sinking sand! I continue to hope in my future because I know who holds my future. I am working diligently at my gifts, and I am expecting great things in my music, my writing, and photography. I want to inspire others to press through difficult situations and stay focused on your dreams. There’s something about overcoming the struggle that propels you into greatness!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in the small town of Statesboro. GA. Friends typically like to travel out of town. However, we are slowly growing some atmosphere here. For a night out on the town, I would take them to Sugar Magnolia Cafe. They have great food, drinks, and desserts with a intimate atmosphere. We’d probably drive to Savannah for live music. For a long weekend, friends and I travel to Atlanta to the many great places to eat and listen to live music, Rays on the River, St. James Live, Mary Mac’s Tea Room, are just a few places we’ve visited.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have many women in my life who are rock stars in their own right. They inspire me to step out, keep pushing, try new things, believe in myself, and take care of myself. They are my prayer partners, my fitness coaches, my confidants, my advisors, and my friends. Each of them bring something different into my life that has contributed to who I am as a strong, confident woman. As I reflect on my beginnings, I have had a wealth of female mentors to impart their wisdom and affirmations into me, starting with my grandmothers, my godmother, and certainly my mother. I dedicate this shoutout to all the voices that harmonize to create my song.
