We had the good fortune of connecting with LeAnne Challenger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LeAnne, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I never expected to have my own business! I was traveling as an opera singer, then decided to move back to my hometown. I saw a great need in my community for music education, so I began teaching private school music. After teaching in private schools for 3 years, I decided I wanted to make my own hours and have more opportunities to teach more students. So I became Kindermusik certified and began my own studio.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a master’s degree focus in vocal performance. Before teaching, I traveled with opera companies in the United States and Greece. I had the privilege to sing the Japanese national anthem for Japanese dignitaries, sing Carmina Burana under the stars in Greece, and perform in wonderful cities throughout the US. I look back on those times fondly.

This hasn’t been an easy transition, from opera singer to singing “Wheels on the Bus” with preschoolers, but I still perform in musicals at Habersham Community Theatre, and give small concerts during the year–which really invigorates my love of music and performance. My goal is to educate the next generation to have an appreciation (or perhaps a passion) for the arts.

My studio is a place of love, laughter, and learning. I teach Kindermusik classes to ages 1-5, and piano and voice lessons for ages 8 and up. I am grateful to share music with over 80 students each week. Seeing them make progress and grow musically is the best gift I’ve been given.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, the Northeast Georgia mountains are an amazing place to visit. You could fit so much into a week long trip. Clarkesville has antique shopping, mom and pop restaurants, and a rich history of its own. You could hike the Tallulah Gorge, spend the day in Helen, or relax at one of our many wineries. Another day could be spent fishing on the Soque River, kayaking, or seeing a show at our community theatre. There are very few restaurants or stores. The majority of our businesses are owned by locals. Habersham County has so much to offer, it’s difficult to choose which things to check out!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Every music teacher I’ve ever had has played a part in my decision to become a music educator. But I think the most support and encouragement I’ve received is from my small community. Everyone in my community theatre, family, church, and chamber of commerce has been supportive of my business. Habersham County is an amazing place to live, and an even better place to have a small business. The amount of love is incredible.
