We had the good fortune of connecting with Camelia Wyman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Camelia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a native of Durham, NC, and a wife and mother, I have always had a passion for giving back to my community and helping others. Overcoming my own fears and adversities and seeing the emergence of social media and the ongoing peer pressure that many teens face, the need for support and empowerment was essential.
In 2015, I took a leap of faith and embarked on a journey to help teens who may have faced some of these challenges, which birthed iAmMe Girls. The program empowers youth women in my community and worldwide to love who they are despite their circumstances and be groundbreakers within their community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
iAmMe Girls is a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization based in Durham, N.C., and provides services to girls ages 10-18. iAmMe Girls mission is to empower and inspire youth girls to love themselves despite their circumstances, become community leaders, and make healthy life choices.

The program’s vision is to inspire girls across the world to overcome barriers that interfere with their ability to love themselves, feel empowered, and be healthy in their mind, body, and soul.

The program is a year-round initiative dedicated to the growth and development of girls. iAmMe Girls aim to inspire youth girls, too love themselves, build healthy relationships, be leaders, and conquer any challenges they may face while pursuing their dreams. Through group and one-on-one mentorship, the girls are educated on leadership, maintaining healthy relationships, health and fitness, and community service.

The program is curriculum is based on iAmMe Girls four pillars: Individuality, Leadership, Health and Wellness, and Community Service.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Durham, NC, is forever growing, and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of the community. Durham offers so many restaurants that I can not pick just one. Durham has great entertainment, art, and culture. Durham also has several educational such as Duke University and North Carolina Central University, and athletics and medical assets.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This journey has not been easy at all! Every day I’m learning something new; however, my family and team have been supportive and have been there every step. I am truly thankful for having such a strong support system and would like to dedicate my shoutout to them.
