We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamilah Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamilah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started my business I saw it as a creative outlet for my corporate career. Often in our 9-5’s we have a set amount of responsibilities and areas that we touch. Being an entrepreneur on the other hand allows you to make decisions from the financial to creative aspects. My hands literally touch every part of your business. In addition, it has allowed me to be creative in the products I create in addition to creative decision-making solutions to propel my business forward.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a self-taught metalsmith jewelry designer. The Pink Locket creates modern minimalist and even slightly statement jewelry handmade to perfection that empowers the person who chooses to wear it. With the idea that our body is our canvas, our jewelry pieces are meant to compliment your everyday wardrobe. It took many years and a lot of learning and pivoting the business itself to get it to where it is today. As a creative entrepreneur, it’s necessary to know when to put on a creative hat and when to put on a business hat. Lessons I’ve learned along the way is that if you want to actually grow your business, you need help and access to certain opportunities. The one thing about my business is that I’m very transparent about the materials I use, how and where my products are produced. I want The Pink Locket to be known for its integrity and transparency to its customers.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to Ponce City Market, there are so many cool shops and spots to eat there. Has a bit of an artsy vibe to it. Krog Street and the Belt Line are definitely must sees as well as local distilleries and breweries.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a very supportive tribe of family, friends, and day one customers who continue to push me and challenge me. In addition, The Artisan Group has given me tremendous opportunities to help land my jewelry on TV shows and Award shows. Traffic, Sales, and Profit team led by Lamar and Ronnie Tyler has given access to a network of other successful entrepreneurs and excellent tools and solutions to help drive my business as well.
