We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The amount of time and steps that are required to prepare lumber before you even begin to build a piece of furniture. Selecting the right boards and the milling process takes a lot of time, but makes for a better product in the end.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I got my start making furniture for myself. Then I began selling mostly coffee tables on Etsy. Eventually, I made the decision to quit my job and make furniture full time. It wasn’t an easy transition. The biggest challenge was learning to charge for my time. There were several times when a person reached out for a quote and I would spend hours on a coming up with a quote for design only to have them not respond. I had to learn to charge a consultation fee and charge non refundable deposits. I felt guilty at first but ultimately it saved me time and helped my business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
