We had the good fortune of connecting with Adreon Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adreon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For me, the thought of starting my own business has been a recurring thought for years. I’ve worked as an independent contractor for a decade. But I didn’t start taking the thought seriously until two years ago. I knew working a traditional job just wasn’t for me anymore after years of toxic environments and little pay. Being another ant in the anthill wasn’t going to build the future that I wanted. I started decided to turn small gigs into a real business around 2018 after doing a few freelance projects. I got satisfaction and fulfillment from helping others succeed in a way I never did from my traditional jobs. Being my own boss and creating a viable future have always been goals of mine since obtaining my undergraduate degree.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Much of my art is dedicated to highlighting the best of the African diaspora. It is something I’ve been passionate about for a number of years as I felt there was a lack of representation within the writing and animation worlds. Having backgrounds in both animation and writing has allowed me to create a brand centered on telling the Black experience through words and images. My mission was inspired by the lack of Black characters in a variety of leading roles in animation. I want the African diaspora to have our Avatar or The Simpsons or South Park in terms of longevity and reverence.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout my fellow SCAD alumni (you know who you are) who encourage me to pursue my career in the arts. I want to thank my family especially my dad Johnnie, brother Rico and cousin Jay for always encouraging me to pursue my path as an entrepreneur.
