We had the good fortune of connecting with Ren Lowe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ren, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision that I made that I know has contributed to my success is to trust myself. I made a conscious decision to trust myself and to believe my skillset.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the things that sets me apart from other children’s book authors is that my partner and co-author is my 9 year old daughter Kameryn. We are The Mother-Daughter Writing Duo. I am most proud and excited about being able to write books with my daughter that feature an African American girl along with her Magical Unicorn who is Brown with Curly hair just like her. You don’t see books that have brown unicorns to represent our black and brown children. In doing this, together we are filling the diversity gap in fictional children’s literature.

Writing has always been easy for me, its what I’m naturally gifted at. However, becoming a published children’s book author was a bit more challenging. I had to overcome the challenges of seeking others approval about my career choices and make the decision to do what was best for me.

Being separated from my job as a telecommunications manager while on maternity leave, is what gave me the extra nudge to go hard at pursuing my life long dream of becoming an author. Surely if I could manage one of the highest volumes stores in my district, for a billion dollar company. I could show up for myself everyday and pursue my passion while also making a profit from it as well.

One of the challenges that I was faced with that I had to overcome was imposters syndrome. I used to say “I published a children’s book” versus referring to myself as an author. It wasn’t until I published my 3rd children’s book that I began to look at myself differently and refer to myself as an author. I’ve learned that people will only see you the way you see yourself. In order for others to “put some respect on your name” you have to do it first. So I embraced my title as author and in doing so , my daughter embraced her title as well.

I want the world to know that our book series and brand “My Magical Brown Unicorn” is more than just a collection of children’s books. It is a mindset. One that teaches children and adults alike to embrace their differences, to walk in their magic, and to be bold and colorful. One that my daughter and I will continue to embody through our books and our actions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much to do in Atlanta! We would definitely visit the Coca-Cola factory and The Aquarium. That entire area is beautiful. We’d definitely have drinks at The Sugar Factory, and then we’d eat at Copelands of New Orleans, I miss the one that used to be located in Atlantic Station. For an evening out we’d go to The Linnethia Lounge, and we’d have to visit Top Golf for more fun, food, and drinks. For shopping we would definitely visit the New Black Wall Street Market.

Being a mom of two young children, I’m mostly a homebody , but these are some of the places that I really enjoy. They are so much fun, and full of interesting people.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to dedicate my shout out to The Celebrated children’s book Author Crystal Swain-Bates. It was through her coaching and mentorship that I was able to go from an aspiring author to a self – published children’s book author. She also gave me the tools and skillset I needed to teach others how to do the same.
