We had the good fortune of connecting with Orpheus Kennedy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Orpheus, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting The Underground Lab was to create a brand that had the same reach, technology, and quality as the major production companies, but focused on the independent artists. Being able to provide an atmosphere of sophistication and quality to the local artist, who has tremendous talent, is our main goal. Content creation is an art form, and artists of all walks of light deserve to have their content distributed to the masses. The Underground Lab created the platform for those artists and content creators. Our platform is designed to allow for worldwide visual distribution on multiple devices of content created by artists who have amazing talent.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Underground Lab is a Production company that owns and operates an AVOD Television Network, a Radio Station., and is a Book Publisher. We have built from the ground up, a distribution company that has the ability to reach worldwide audiences. The difference between The Underground Lab and Other Production companies is we have a content distribution network built into our offering that allows the content to be seen in 80+ countries. We have the ability to go live directly to viewers internationally. Our platform was built with the independent artist in mind. We allow content creators to push their content into places around the globe that normally would be outside of their reach. We do not have to go to another entity for distribution. There are no middle men in our organization. Our tagline we tell to Artists is “we can have your content worldwide, in 30 mins”.
I am most proud of the fact we have accomplished the creation of the platform by kicking down the doors of the industry standards and creating a new lane. We built our platform to be different on purpose. We don’t like status quo, and we definitely hate doing it because this is the way its always done. We did it our way and we will continue to knock down doors until there are no more doors left.
I got to where i am today by never giving up. There is no “it cant be done”. This work is hard, and there is no easy path. Hard work and dedication to excellence are ingrained in my work ethic. Looking back on it now, starting the business was not easy, but it was also not as difficult as you may think. You have to be able to deal with change. Change is the only constant in being an entrepreneur. You have to be a fast thinker, and able to adapt at a moments notice.
The lessons I learned along the way were to always work hard, put your all into and to never stop moving forward. No matter what you do, always move forward.
I want the world to know The Underground Lab was created to provide a high quality voice for the independent artists to showcase their talent. We are here! Watch Us Work!!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We are based out of DC. Things are a lot different up here. We def have to get some chicken wings, french fries and mumbo sauce. I would take them to the International Spy Museum, go catch Suttle Thoughts Band playing live and wind up in Adams Morgan to grab a piece of pizza from Jumbo Slice. The rest of the week we would def hit the African American Museum, see the sites and go check out the waterfront restaurants. DC night life is different.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Underground Lab would not be where it is today without the hard work, sweat and tears of Jorae Williams, Shane Anderson, Frankie Ball and Miguel Brown-Collado. All 4 of y’all have dedicated your most precious commodity to helping this company take off and reach new highs and accomplish new feats. Your time, energy, effort and hard work has not gone unnoticed and I am forever grateful for you and your dedication to excellence. I am so proud of you and cannot wait to see what’s next.
