We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Jane & Kiki and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary Jane & Kiki, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Trust and honesty is extremely important to us, as well as to our brand. As business partners, it is necessary to trust each other implicitly. There are so many daily decisions that must be made and it is not always possible for both of us to weigh in on every decision. We trust that we both believe in our business and will make the best decisions possible. It is this bond that shines through during each of our episodes.

We are the hosts of a comedy podcast. The best comedy comes from honest feelings and observations. Our opinions are our own, but they come from a place of honesty and sincerity. We believe that through laughter we can shed light on the things that need to be changed in our world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In May of 2021 I invited Kiki to lunch to talk about an idea. I was sure that she would think I was crazy. Surprisingly, when I brought up the idea of a podcast she became excited too. Just like that Poppin’ Culture Podcast was born. We approach each episode as mothers from the xennial generation, but that is where our similarities end. We both have different backgrounds, life experiences, and ideas, but it works. It is our differences that makes our podcast so much fun. Through our conversations we can recognize that we do not always agree, but we can be respectful and laugh at and with each other.

As a podcast we are still relatively young. We struggle each week with expanding our reach to listeners. The podcast community can feel very saturated and sometimes it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. Each week we spend hours promoting the latest episodes. We spend time building relationships with our listeners, researching new material, and developing our format. We have learned the most through trial and error and are improving our podcast with each new episode. We are so happy that we have this platform to promote understanding and the importance of friendship through laughter and popular culture.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are from Augusta, Georgia and there is no where else that we would want to live. Augusta has an amazing community of artists. When I have out of town guests there are always a few places that we have to go. The first stop is always to Surrey Center to have lunch at Tako Sushi. I always recommend a crazy roll and a sexy salad. If my guest is looking for some outdoor adventure we can take a walk or bike ride down the Augusta Canal. For dinner we would have to visit Doc’s Porchside for the best tasting wings and great local live music. There are so many amazing and historical venues downtown on Broad Street that offer world class entertainment. Augusta has the privilege of being host to the Masters Golf Tournament located at the Augusta National. There are also many historical sites like the boyhood home of President Woodrow Wilson and the original Fort Augusta located on the campus of Augusta University Summerville. I could go on, but Augusta, Ga is an amazing to place to live and visit.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge shoutout to our families! They have been our biggest fans and supporters. They are the first to promote our podcast, join our live videos on social media, and wear our merchandise. They are also very quick to tell us when we bomb or a joke doesn’t land. They keep us grounded and hold us accountable. There have been so many late nights and time spent away from our families, but their belief in our podcast and us is what gives us the motivation to continue recording. We also have a special friend, who we call our Momager. She plays studio audience during our recordings and reminds us to reel it in when we stray too far off topic. Last, but not least, we want to thank our fans around the world that have listened to our episodes, watched our videos, and promoted our brand. All of these people encourage us to keep recording.
