We had the good fortune of connecting with Joi Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was to find something that I love to do and make money off of it. I started out taking pictures of my mom when she wanted to take pictures after church or she just wanted some pictures to post on social media. I was inspired by my mom to pursue this and turn it into a business. It started out as a hobby and turned into a business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe was makes me different is that I am a future engineer. I take what I have learned from the process and struggle of my business and apply it to my personal life. I am currently a junior in college in a dual-degree program (5-year program) pursuing Physics (Oglethorpe University) /Mechanical Engineering (Kennesaw State University). I strive to be the best I can be at all times and try to learn and experience everything I can while I can. I can definitely say being a Physics major currently has been a challenge because of the amount of coursework and the complexity of it, but I have learned that there are various ways to get help and to find resources that best worked for me. I overcame and am still overcoming my challenges/struggles by not giving up or giving in. I learned that in life there are walls, sometimes climbing it is not the answer, but just plowing through it is. It is not a lesson of how you can get around it, but how will you get through it. I want the world to know that I, Joi Butler, am a young woman who I will be a future engineer with the hopes of changing the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I grew up in Marietta, GA, but I am familiar with Atlanta, GA. I would say the first place we can go is the Altanta Botanical Garden, then head over to

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wanted to first shoutout Turner Chapel AME Church for allowing me to present this business idea first there and for the startup support that they gave me. I also wanted to thank everyone who has helped in with either pictures, or the making of my logo (Avonti Adizahyr), and everyone who has supported me from the very beginning. Last but not least, I want to shoutout to my Mommy (Raushanah N Butler) for always pushing me to be my best and continue striving towards my goals! I am so grateful and I love you to life!
