We had the good fortune of connecting with Clare Umberger and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Clare, what do you attribute your success to?
I think being successful is attaining your goals and a lot of mine haven’t been attained yet. But looking back, I have taken many steps towards reaching my goals and with that, I have been successful. I think the most important factor behind my success thus far is that I have always stayed on my own path. In this industry, it’s very tempting to follow someone else’s path because you think if it works for them, it’ll work for you and that it’s a guarantee to becoming “successful”. Moving to a specific city, signing with one special agent. At the end of the day, you are on your own path and need to make choices that work for you and not anyone else.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
How I got my start in the industry is a little different. I signed with my first agent when I was 3 and grew up doing commercial and print work. I’ve known from a very young age that I wanted to be an actor. I’ve always loved performing. I truly bring a passion to all my projects I do and cherish each one of them. Growing up, even though I was auditioning and going to set, still didn’t mean I knew the industry. I had to take many classes and I still take classes to learn more about the industry and grow as an actor. Stage Combat has been my favorite class to date. It is so, so important to take classes and continue to take classes and even read books on acting. There is so much to learn.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man! I feel like I’m still learning about all the great places in the city. Downtown Alpharetta is so cute and has endless food/drink options. I went to Cru wine bar at the Avalon once and had so much fun (not a wine connoisseur but I wish I was). My friends took me to Dark Horse in Virginia Highlands one night and they do karaoke with a live band – cool, right?! Campania’s Pasta Boscaiola is to die for.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank Shirley Venard, my mentor in Minnesota. She has been encouraging me ever since I took a “Business of Acting” class taught by her at the Guthrie Theatre back in 2018. She took me under her wing and has given me invaluable advice. She is an incredible actor and I’m so lucky to have someone like her in my life.

I would also like to thank my mom for constantly reminding me that if something doesn’t work out, that something better is on the way.
