We had the good fortune of connecting with Makenta Chism and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Makenta, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think risk taking is vital in entrepreneurship. Nothing about being an entrepreneur is certain. You have to have faith in the unknown and bet on it. While I used to be hesitant about taking risks, it now excites me. I now understand that although I may not always get my expected results from the risks I take, there is always a lesson to be learned, which is truly valuable and aids in growth not only my personal growth but in the growth of my business as well.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel like i’m still finding myself as an “artist”. I’m learning to understand that what I like isn’t what everyone is going to like, and that’s okay. It’s easy to become wrapped up in social media looks and think that, that’s what you’re supposed to do but that’s not the case. I use to force myself to do looks with glitter and multi-colored eyeshadows, and dramatic liner but I found myself hating it every time, not because it looked bad but because it wasn’t me. I prefer natural makeup looks. Less is more in my opinion, and it also aids in client comfort. I want every client to feel like a better version of themselves not a new version. Client comfort is one of the most important things when offering a service. I’ve found that asking questions helps. While I am the professional, they’re preferences matter and can be incorporated with what I already know.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First we would go to Wegmans for the ultimate grocery store experience! I would pick up a few things needed to make at least a couple of meals, however, we would spend a lot of time eating out! Flying Biscuit and Cowfish are my go to’s for breakfast and dinner and Crumbl Cookies for dessert! Shopping is always a must, so we would go to SouthPoint Mall in Durham and we would definitely go to Glenwood Ave for some night life activities. The sunflowers have blossomed right now so we would go to Dorthia Dix park and view those, and also drive down to the beach for a day trip!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Mom plays a huge role in who I am as a person and where I am in my business. She’s always encouraged me to go to school for what I love, understanding that the standard college route wasn’t fit for me and she never forced it upon me. My mom has covered every doubt I’ve ever had, and assured me that IF I fall, she’ll pick me up. She wants me to succeed just as much as I do, if not more! She is on me constantly, but in the most peaceful and positive way. I would like to give her, her flowers while she’s alive.
