We had the good fortune of connecting with Henry Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Henry, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I knew that the world of resume writing and career coach was extremely competitive for two reasons – the barrier to entry is low and anyone can wake up the next morning and call themselves a Professional Resume Writer or Career Coach. Because of this I wanted to make sure I differentiated myself from my competition by allowing my results to speak for themselves. I prioritized this over chasing a bag because I knew the money would eventually come – and it did.
What should our readers know about your business?
I got really good at resume writing after rewriting my resume over 100 times (no exaggeration) and reaching out to 300+ top professionals on LinkedIn for resume help/career advice during my 10 months of unemployment. During that time I learned so much about resume writing and career advancement that when I finally got out of my treacherous situation they stayed with me. I knew a 9-5 was never in my long term future but I had no earthly idea what I would have to do to make that happen.
Although I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit since I was a kid, I had no earthly idea if I’d be cutout to be my own boss. I was a sub-par employee with great ideas and untapped potential. It was at that moment I realized I was never meant to work a 9-5, just as many aren’t meant to be business owners. I put my intuition to the test, stepped out on faith and answered my calling. I took the skills and experience I gained and launched UWork in 2019. I haven’t stopped growing since. I’ve been ripped off, scammed, depressed, doubted, exhausted and every other struggle adjective the rest of my fellow entrepreneurs go through.
You never fully overcome challenges because they don’t stop coming – you just learn to deal with and solve them as you go. There’s no one size fits all answer since every business has it’s own unique set of challenges but if I could give three pieces of advice that helped me tremendously it would be 3. Stay organized and know your numbers 2. Become militant with your time management skills 3. Find good help
