We had the good fortune of connecting with Demetrice Amos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Demetrice, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I owned a daycare prior to going back to corporate America 17 years ago. My lightbulb went off after the pandemic surfaced, and I realized this was my opportunity to spread my wings and start my own business again. However, this time around, I was led to showcase my baking talent, so I decided to start a bakery. A little over a year later, I believe I made the best decision ever.

What should our readers know about your business?
I do not only specialize in custom cakes. I felt it was necessary to cater to everyone; therefore, I make cakes that are more affordable, which I consider my basic cakes. I also do not really use fondant, I have learned that you can make a beautiful cake utilizing buttercream frosting and achieve the same results. My customers are always left satisfied because of my decision to not use fondant, they are able to enjoy the cake in its entirety. I believe my business has been able to expand the way that it has within this past year due to my steadfastness, dedication, persistence, creativity, and excellent customer service skills. There were times where I did question where my business would go, but I never gave up. I continued to do what I do and never lost focus with what I had in store for DemeCakes and that is what helps me get through the challenging times. What I have learned along the way is to stick with what you know, never fix what is not broken. What I want people to know about DemeCakes is that we are here to produce a great product and in return to put a smile on people’s faces.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My kids have taught me to expand my palate and try new things, and that has made me a foodie along the way. I would definitely take my friend across the city to try different cuisines like Thai and Indian, which are two of my favorite cuisines. I also enjoy drinking wine, so I would invite them along with me to some vineyards in North Georgia. One of my favorite vineyards in Georgia is Three Sisters Vineyards, the scenery is amazing and the wine is delicious! I do enjoy getting adrenaline rushes from time to time so we would have to end the week at an amusement park. I go to Six Flags any chance I can get.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My kids are my voice of reason. They were always the one who put a bug in my ear to start a bakery, but I never acted on it. They always believed in me and continued to push me until I budged one day and that is when I decided to establish DemeCakes.
