We had the good fortune of connecting with Yinka Taiwo- Peters and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yinka, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“Wear sunshine”is the affirmation and mantra of the YTPshop brand
Sunshine, like the summer, symbolizes a feeling of freedom, excitement. We make our products in Nigeria and it is filled with sunshine year-round.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
YTPshop celebrates the African heritage and adorns confident women with bold aesthetics and colors. YTPshop is based and ships worldwide from the U.S. I founded YTPshop in 2017 with no formal fashion training and only $200. Over time, I have taught myself to design all our products from the U.S., while our network of female network artisans manufacture in Nigeria.
When I started this brand, I wanted to share my love for African fashion with the world and to also empower our artisans, whose families depend on these earnings, in Nigeria. Today, we have a small all-female team across Nigeria and the U.S. that quickly learns from our mistakes and continues to improve the quality of our products. YTPshop has been featured in several publications and fashion shows across North America
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Recently, my friend visited ATL for a weekend and we had lots of fun, treats, history and outdoors. On Friday, we went to 5Church rooftop for dinner and to Pasha for drinks because they play Afrobeats. Saturday was for meaningful attractions; starting with World of Coca-Cola for the business history of the #1 brand in the world and the MLK National History Park to see landmarks in honor of the civil rights icon. Sunday was for the outdoors. We hiked up the Arabia mountain in Dekalb county and then walked on the Beltine in Midtown before getting some yummy Jeni’s ice cream.
I love ATL because there is something to do for everyone.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this shout out to my mom, the matriarch of my family and the one that our bestseller, the Funmi dress, is named after. I was born into humble beginnings in Lagos Nigeria. As a single mother, she ensured that I had the best education that she could afford and continue to emotionally and financially support my endeavors including starting YTPshop.
