We had the good fortune of connecting with Yung Skinny Tay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yung, how do you define success?
To me, success is about setting a goal and accomplishing it. The journey itself is an essential part of success. The highs, the lows, the struggles, digging deep within oneself finding the courage/strength to persevere no matter what obstacles may stand in the way. Working hard towards what one wants for themselves and going to get it by any means necessary.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As far as I can remember I’ve always had a passion for art for real. When I was younger I use to get out of school and watch a lot of anime/cartoons at my grandma’s house. Growing up, I was always into pop culture and used to indulge in a lot of video games, cartoons and music mostly. Music was always my get away from the world for real. I used to like to read and write a lot too. It wasn’t until I hit like middle school where I kinda made the correlation between music and like writing. Just expressing oneself. I was always good at like drawing I guess, that’s what I was kinda known for. Music was really like my passion though.
When it got to the point where it was like all I really wanted to do was create, I felt limited at times. Just not having the resources growing up for real or not being as privileged as other kids. Feeling misunderstood and not. having support for real def played a role. I was always a loner and I moved around a lot so making friends was kinda hard too lowkey. I always felt like I couldn’t relate to nobody for real. I never really felt like I fit in with anybody I was always my own person. Kinda weird, but not like “cool” weird or whatever at the time I guess. I fell into a deep depression but eventually I just pulled myself out of it. Some days I still deal with it, but I just put all my energy into creating for real. It gives me an outlet/makes it easier to deal with. Learning how to let go really the best thing. Especially shit you can’t control.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s always somethin goin on in Atlanta. I don’t really like goin to clubs for real. I mean, I may go occasionally if I’m invited depending on who I’m with. Majority of the time though, I’d rather be in the studio if possible. Anywhere I can record for real or work on music long as the vibe right. I’m always creating, if not music maybe working on some designs or something. I used to go to this spot called Revery a lot though. They closed recently, but it used to have VR game booths alongside a bar. Lots of creative people and upcoming artists used to hang out there. DJs spinning music and everything. I really would just go to just chill, relax. Dance and shit like that, hear some good music get fucked up. Sometimes I’d link up with some of my folks there. #RIPRevery
Our Bar on Edgewood Ave a cool hole inda wall type spot. I use to go there a lot couple years ago. I recently just went the other night I was surprised they still be lit over there. The Beltline cool too though. It stretch pretty far and it’s near Ponce City Market. Hella shops and restaurants there. Old Fourth Ward skatepark close by too. Shit right around the corner from Little Five Points. If you wanna shop, or just like more of a weird, trippy vibe Little Five definitely the place to go.
I like goin to see my folks perform too. Like I say, it’s always somethin goin on in Atlanta. It really just depends on your vibe for real. Shoutout to Fani & Closette on Walker St.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Atlanta, my hometown born and raised. If it weren’t for all the people I’ve crossed paths with, the different environments I’ve been in, etc. I wouldn’t be who I am today.
