We had the good fortune of connecting with Wira Liandy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wira, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because it’s what I enjoy most, I can express what’s in my head, because the artworks I do are based on psychological things around me.
An artistic career can also give me flexible working hours without having to stick to a monotonous system, plus the fine arts environment in my place gives me a lot of energy to continue working.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I was in college I focused on graphic art, but nowadays most of my artworks are paintings.
My artwork is about defense mechanisms which can be defined as “unconscious resources used by the ego” to ultimately reduce internal stress. A person often designs these unconscious mechanisms to reduce conflict within themselves, particularly between the superego. This is often encountered in my daily life, therefore my work tells the story of defense mechanisms represented in the visual form of pangolin scales that I developed according to my imagination, the selection of these visuals is based on the similarity of the nature of pangolins that protect themselves from their hard scales when they feel threatened, as well as defense mechanisms that regulate mindset so that excessive stress does not occur.
The meticulousness and neatness of the details of my artwork is something I take pride in.
It’s certainly not easy to reach this position,
I have to practice my skills almost every day, look for relationships and a positive environment, sometimes in some situations I feel left behind but the thing I keep is my optimistic nature, I really hold on to it because it’s what keeps me going.
Of course, I want the world to recognize my name through my art.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like to go to quiet places such as nature tourism, mountains, waterfalls and so on, I will invite someone to take a relaxing trip, I also like exotic animals, therefore every trip I definitely visit a place that has exotic animals.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The support and love from my family is the most fundamental thing for where I am now, they always support whatever I want to do.
The art environment where I work and my fellow artists are also important for what I have achieved today.
