We had the good fortune of connecting with Winnie Su and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Winnie, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
No other quote comes close to my favorite one, which is “The most important thing in life is happiness.” This simple yet profound statement deeply resonates with me as it captures the essence of a truly fulfilling existence. Happiness, which can be defined in diverse ways, extends beyond extraordinary moments or remarkable accomplishments. It can be found in the simple joys of everyday life, like savoring a delicious meal, laughing with loved ones, or enjoying a peaceful moment of solitude. Life is transient, and acknowledging the fleeting nature of life prompts us to seize the present, embrace our passions, and prioritize our personal happiness. This quote serves as my guiding philosophy, reminding me that the purpose of living is to experience genuine joy. After all, what is the purpose of living if not to experience happiness?

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in analog photography, focusing on film shooting and alternative printing processes. What sets me apart is my passion for capturing the intricate details of everyday life using analog methods. I am fascinated by the subtle textures, nuanced emotions, and fleeting moments that often go unnoticed. The elegance and time-intensive nature of analog techniques greatly appeal to me, and my commitment to attention to detail is a defining aspect of my work.

My professional journey hasn’t been easy, and I acknowledge that there is still a long road ahead. Acquiring knowledge about traditional techniques has been challenging due to their limited accessibility and recognition in today’s world. However, I find inspiration in a passionate community that appreciates and continues to work with these mediums. Their wisdom and selfless exchange of information motivate us all to grow together and contribute to the flourishing of these art forms.

Patience, perseverance, and staying true to my vision have been crucial in overcoming obstacles and refining my craft. I strive to preserve and celebrate the beauty of analog photography by evoking emotions and fostering appreciation. The collective dedication and love of those who cherish these traditional techniques create an inspiring and vibrant space for artistic growth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, my main objective would be to give them an unforgettable experience by exploring a mix of captivating exhibitions, quirky shops, and places that hold special memories and stories. We would also venture to culturally vibrant locations and immerse ourselves in nature’s beauty, like strolling along the beach, hiking through forests, and enjoying picturesque parks. Of course, I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to showcase my culinary skills by preparing homemade dishes and desserts, as I genuinely enjoy cooking and sharing my creations with others. Along the way, I would also introduce them to some of my favorite local eateries, where we can indulge in diverse culinary delights while engaging in lively discussions. Ultimately, my goal is to provide an authentic glimpse into my life and my deep connection with the city, offering an experience that goes beyond rigid guided tours.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a big shoutout to all the people and things that have had a huge impact on my journey. First and foremost, my family has been my rock, always supporting me and cheering me on in everything I do. Their constant encouragement has been a source of strength throughout my endeavors. I also want to show my appreciation to my friends, who have been there for me when I’ve been unsure or needed a helping hand. Their attentive ears and wise advice have been absolutely priceless. And let’s not forget my college professors, who not only taught me valuable knowledge but also gave me the confidence and motivation to pursue my creative passions. Last but not least, I want to recognize that every person, every experience, and every aspect of my life has played a vital role in shaping me into the person I am today. They have all been instrumental in unlocking my potential and bringing me to where I am now.
