We had the good fortune of connecting with Wilmont Berry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wilmont, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be in the buisness arena but I didn’t know what to do. As I grew older and started working different jobs, I began to realize that the majority of people that were wealthy and had control over their time were business owners. As I worked different jobs, my desire to be with my family more, have more control of my time, and to have my own (business) grew more and more. After searching and praying about what I should pursue as a business, the opportunity to go into real estate opened a door for me.
What should our readers know about your business?
I run a real estate buisness where I get the opportunity to serve and help people fulfill their real estate goals. I absolutely love to serve and I believe that’s what I called to todo . I get excited and I’m fulfilled when I give top notch service to my clients and see them reach their goals. At this point in my business, I’m most proud that I was able to leave a fortune 500 company to work for myself and succeed. This was not easy to do because it was a really good job with great benefits and a company car. However, I am so happy I made that decision to take a step of faith. The real estate business is about relationships and serving people. I believe what sets me apart is my desire to go above an beyond for my clients. Whatever it ethically takes for me to see them win, I will try my best to get it done.
Today in my real estate buisness I have been able to help dozens of clients buy and sell properties. It was not easy to get to this point but it was worth it. One of the most important lessons that I have learned to get this point is that closings are the byproduct of my daily activities. My mentors (Kinsley Mickle and Clarence Graham) showed me how to pursue new business and make it daily a routine. There were times where I felt discouraged because I felt that my efforts are not paying off. However what I discovered after consistently putting in the work on a daily basis is that I was building up a pipeline and developing relationships with people that were getting ready to buy or sell. These clients may not be ready today or in a month but at some point they will be ready and they were going to call me.
I want the world to know that you will never know your full potential unless you go all in. I wanted something I could throw my whole self at and reap the benefits from it. I found that in real estate and I am just getting started.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was coming to the “Big City” of Orangeburg, SC, I would take him to one of the best Barbeque places that I know of called Earl Dukes. They have some of the best hash and rice on the planet with great sweet tea. Also, we would go to one of the best golf courses in the SC which is the Orangeburg Country Club. The country club is a little piece of paradise in Orangeburg where the course and practice facility is always in mint condition. Its always a treat to play that course even if I play bad. Lastly, I would take him to get a great desert from Randolph’s Artisan Ice and Gelatos. This place is amazing with great customer service and delicious deserts.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I want to thank God for so many reasons but without His guidance and grace I wouldn’t be where I am today. Second, I want to thank my wife Dr. Jessica R Berry. It’s truly a blessing to do life with this wonderful person. I get to live with someone who inspires me to be bold, lead, and inspire. Third, I want thank my parents William and Rosa Berry for raising me in a solid household. As a parent, I now understand the sacrifices they made for me growing up and because of that I do the same for my kids. Lastly, I want thank my mentors Kinley Mickle and Clarence Graham. I truly look up to these guys and thank God for them. They gave me that push that I needed to really take a step of faith and also hold me accountable. I really appreciate those guys.
