We had the good fortune of connecting with Udee Bassey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Udee, what matters most to you?
Being and becoming more myself is instrumental to my artistry and craft. These days, more than ever, it has become imperative to remain in my authenticity and joy. From this space, I can create that which speaks to the inner core of storytelling.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As I get older, I realise that my art will always reflect divinity. In many ways, I feel this is what most artists are trying to do: touch upon the complexity and expansiveness of the beauty we see around us. Artists are some of the greatest observers, elevating the mundane into something eternal. This is the cord that ties my artistry.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Lately, and partly due to COVID, I have been thrust outdoors: all my activities have been outside frolicking in parks, chasing waterfalls (lol) and creeks, hiking, taking long bike rides or walks… I found a lot of joy in this!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without being facetious, I credit where I am today to every single soul with whom I meet and interact. For me, I am grateful for the stranger (angel) who guided me at Home Depot when I was so confused about how to take care of an elephant ear plant I stumbled upon while shopping. I equally shout out my siblings, who have been some of the most consistent voices and cheerleaders in my navigating of this creative space. There is no soul too insignificant in my journey – if you have offered me a genuine smile on the street, you have blessed my path. If you have spent time, energy and resources opening my mind to new possibilities, you have blessed my path.
