We had the good fortune of connecting with Trilina Pucci and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trilina, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
As a writer, success is a strange beast. You never feel as if you’ve achieved it. It always feels elusive, even when others use the term as a descriptor for you. Somehow, I always find myself striving for more, whether that means better reviews on the next book. Or a larger pre-order. More critical success in the media. It’s neverending. So, I’ve learned to find wins in small things so that I can strive without feeling like I’m not succeeding. I do small things that are now habitual.
My most important habit is keeping the world I’m creating a secret. Nobody gets a first read until I’m entrenched because outside voices aren’t always helpful and can be disheartening initially.
Each time I start a novel, I throw myself a first-word party because the first scene is always the hardest to write. It reminds me that the willingness to create within itself is a win.
During the process, I allow myself the room to let my brain rot on reality television reruns without admonishment for not doing more. I allot one every four days. Finding balance allows for a clear and healthy mind.
At the end of the book, after the edits and whatnot, I celebrate and walk away. This is the best advice I can give for success. The reviews and critiques are none of my business. I create the art for the public to ingest, so my journey stops at the time of publishing.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started independently publishing romance novels six years ago when people said it was impossible to break into the market. It’s even harder now, but I jumped in anyway. That was probably my most important lesson: never believe the hype. You always have to jump into the deep end of the pool to really learn how to swim.
They say everyone can start a book, but few finish, so I made it my mission to start and finish. And I never stopped. Indie publishing takes a lot of hustle. You have to be a jack of all trades, from social media creation to novelist, but the joy I get knowing so many are reading and enjoying something I’ve made up in my living room is amazing. I love it. Dare I say I’m addicted to the rush?
Throughout the years, I have had big hits and books that “failed,” but all in all, my books and my career have been the best adventures of my life. I consider myself a huge success in a market full of self-made bosses.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Piedmont Park is #1 on my list. As is Ponce Market. And there’s no way anyone could leave without going to either Little Ally’s or Atlas.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my assistants, Serena, Sarah, and Katie, for keeping my life together and to the indie book community for being such staunch supporters of my books!
