We had the good fortune of connecting with Torrey McDowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Torrey, how do you think about risk?
It is “easy” to stay where you are comfortable. Familiarity and routine can offer comfort, but there is typically very little growth in those spaces. For years, I stayed in places that made me feel safe until I realized I wouldn’t ever be able to build the life I wanted there. Taking risks has played a vital role in getting me to where I am now. I had to make the choice to just go for it and once I did that, a job, new home, friends, and opportunities just started showing up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
During my day to day, I work full time at a music business firm in downtown Nashville. We focus on business management and ensure that our clients finances are in great shape! I learn something new every single day and I am thankful for the opportunities I have been given there. Outside of my full time gig, I write, perform at rounds around town, and sing whenever I can. I am currently in the process of releasing several singles that will be part of a larger EP coming out in the spring of 2023. I have one single out currently called ‘Outloud’ which I wrote with Caroline McGowan and Kipper Lee Linville. My second single, ‘It Gets Better’, written by Cole Miracle, will be out on October 7th! Getting to this point was certainly not easy. I had some major setbacks while in college and sort of just lost my passion for life. It took me a while to get it back and to find people who wanted to take the risks in music that I wanted to. I have my community now and I am so grateful!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up close to Atlanta so if I was spending the day there, I would probably take friends to Piedmont Park to walk around and eat! There is so much good food! Anything outside with a good drink sounds like an evening I’d want to have with friends in Atlanta. Because I now spend most of my time in Nashville, I take friends to Centennial Park when they are visiting! I know many want to take a stroll down Broadway too, so I do that just so they can have that experience. I love going to L&L Market and enjoy taking drives down Music Row to dream!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people to thank for helping encourage me throughout my life. Family, friends, mentors, educators, co-writers-it could go on forever. These people know who they are and I make sure to remind them!
