We had the good fortune of connecting with Sukhman Kaur and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sukhman, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
If it were not for the Coronavirus pandemic, I probably would not have started my own business. It seemed like the entire country was in a state of limbo and we never really knew when things would go back to ‘normal’ – we still don’t! I was in my last semester of college when I was moved fully online because of the pandemic, so I was left with so much more time on my hands to do other things. At first I spent most of my time binge watching Netflix shows, applying for jobs and trying various viral Tiktok recipes… but then I decided to teach myself to become elite at Adobe softwares. I would spend HOURS editing photos and creating graphics, and I realized that THIS is what I wanted to do in life. I played around with the idea of starting my own website design company and did research on how to get started. My dad’s friend allowed me to create a website for his construction company and I had such a great time getting to play around and make a cool, innovative website for him – and then SK Designs was born.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am most proud of my journey to making this idea become a reality. I started out watching countless makeup tutorials on YouTube, to making my own YouTube channel where I would create beautiful and intricate makeup looks on myself, to promoting various makeup, skincare and lifestyle brands on my own social media platforms, to applying to social media positions anywhere I could find them, and now to creating innovative websites, posts and graphics for companies. I wouldn’t say that it was easy, but I also wouldn’t say that it was extremely hard to get to where I am today professionally. I am still so new to the industry and I have so much more to learn and experience. The biggest challenge I have faced so far is just the risk of fully dedicating myself and my time into this new business venture. It can be scary to commit to something when you do not fully know what the outcome will be. The uncertainty of whether it will succeed or fail is very frightening.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My answer to this question could be a whole 30 page essay! ATL has some of the best food and hangout spots to offer, hands down. Some of my favorite food spots include: 1. El Indio Restaurant & Taqueria — a hole-in-the-wall authentic Mexican restaurant with the BEST birria tacos. My mouth is watering just thinking about them right now. 2. Delbar — an aesthetically pleasing Middle Eastern restaurant perfect for some beautiful drinks and good vibes. 3. The Juicy Crab — I have two rules for this cajun seafood place, don’t wear white and don’t wear makeup. This is the best cajun seafood-in-a-bag spots I have ever tried. Nothing will ever compare to this place. My favorite places to hangout are: 1. Any rooftop in ATL — you’re guaranteed good vibes and a great view at most rooftops in ATL. Some of these include Highnote, Estrella and of course Skyline Park 2. Downtown ATL — just parking on a random street and walking around downtown ATL is such a vibe and you get to discover tons of cool new places 3. Atlanta Botanical Gardens — definitely a must see, especially during the holidays when there’s so many beautiful light displays! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to a few people in my life that really pushed me to make SK Designs come to life. First is my fiancé Gurwinder. He really was my backbone while I was applying for jobs in digital marketing, getting rejected and feeling insecure about my future. He constantly reminded me that I would find my path and that is definitely difficult and draining looking for a job, especially during a pandemic. When I brought the idea of SK Designs to him, he was even more excited than me and has been a constant reminder that this is exactly what I have been working towards. Secondly I would like to thank my mentor, John. John is a business partner of my dad’s and he is someone I turned to when I needed to get my foot in the door with web designing. He really believed that SK Designs is what I should be doing, even when I did not think so – I even resisted it. As a new graduate, I was determined to work for someone else in order to “get experience”. John is the first person to take a look at my rough idea of the company and really inspire me to make it what it is today.
