We had the good fortune of connecting with Stefon Mcbride and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stefon, how do you think about risk?
So I’m from Detroit, specifically the east side, and when you’re from there, you have a tendency to take risks every time you jump off the porch. It could be as simple as going to the store and never making it back home. So a risk is viewed as inevitable. something you may have to do to provide Risk normally means exposure to danger, but the danger of not taking some risk may leave you in a worse position. We frequently view risk in terms of the potential for loss rather than the potential for gain.

Overnight success stories are for television and storytime. My experience and success are the result of 17 years of consistency and hard work. I invested in myself with classes, equipment, meditation, and research. It took time to find my style and the confidence to pursue the level of prestige I hold with my art and clients. So I take none of it for granted and remain humble and gracious about every opportunity given. None of this came over night or easily, and upholding it in a “quick hustle” style field has proven to be even more difficult in today’s market. I’d like to believe that is what sets me and my company, Caperture Pix, apart from all others. taking the time to carefully craft out marketing assets and produce high-quality images for large print and multiple magazines. The biggest lesson to learn is not to skimp on quality, no matter the size of the opportunity. Most of my biggest and best blessings have come from the most unlikely accounts. At Caperture Pix, we love to capture the best and most unique moments during each session.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
You’ve definitely got to swing by The Griot to check out the great vinyl selection, and maybe N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art will set the vibe. For music and a groove, check out Spotlite or anywhere that DJ drummer B or Blaaqgold is spinning. Food has to be fresh and exotic at Vincente’s Cuban Restaurant. As the chefs kiss, you might grab a few photos on the incredible, world-renowned riverwalk we have here in Detroit. Its kind of hard to explain, but a “Stef night out” is what my friends call a epic time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shout out Kae Beaute for recommending me to this incredible publication. However, I have a list of dope individuals that have been in my corner, rocking with me this whole journey. Ebonie Davis and Keith Whitfield, with Urban Eclectic Studios, for pushing me along to reach further and wider. Also Tiffany Yatooma for taking these fire portraits of me for this article.
