We had the good fortune of connecting with Shay Diggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shay, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I believe that the work/life balance is always in flux. Hard work isn’t dirty work to me. We actually say this as a group at the end of workouts at Muscle Thru. I believe in hard work, whether it goes recognized or not. I know that most good things that come about in life and help you thrive are due to hard work. However, you can work yourself to death or overwork. You can work so much and not have anything to show for it at the end of your life. Not only that, but you also run the risk of missing out on important milestones/moments in life. As I have grown older, I really make sure that I learn how to put the phone down and push the laptop away. When you set your boundaries (that may pivot or change depending on the season of life you are in) you end up living a more fulfilling life. Work life balance is something that you and your closest loved one determine together because there is sacrifice that is involved at every level. The balance for one person or a couple may be different, but if thats what you and yours have agreed to, then THAT level is your version of balance.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I know that every entrepreneur can relate to the fact that there are always ups and down when owning a business. It’s never truly easy. You just have some seasons that are not as hard as others. The one constant is you. So you have to keep your eyes up and head down, so to speak. Tough times don’t last; tough people do. So you have to muscle through those times mentally as well as physically. When you realize that no one will want your fulfillment or happiness more than you, then hard work is essential.

At Muscle Thru, we take the same mentality with training. Tough workouts don’t last, but tough people do. So the mentality you bring to a workout is the same mentality you will bring to other areas of life. Through embracing the suck that’s a half hour workout, the members are building that same resilience in their daily lives outside the gym.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Politan Row at Colony Square – great eatery with drinks as well

Ponce City Market – great area for food and shopping

District is a good club

Fellowship – great cigar bar

The Works- great eatery with plenty of bar surrounding it

Wagyu House – great rooftop resturant

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my family, friends, and anyone who has been a part of my life at any point in life. The moments, life experiences and lessons I’ve had up until this point have made me who I am today.

To my wife Heather – thank you for being my best friend, believing in me and being right by my side in the trenches. Here’s to forging our vision and life together.
