We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanna Amoah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanna, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I choose this question because I started my storefront arts and entertainment business at the beginning of COVID-19. I had heard of COVID but did not expect it to burden my business and definitely did not expect it to still be prevalent in my life and business today! There has been so many contributing factors that all yelled, Run! Close! You’re Nuts! Get Out Now! While at the same time, other voices saying, You’re doing great! Keep it up! Way to go! They love you! Just keep going! We’re almost out of this pandemic and you will ROCK IT OUT! It’s after every party, whether adult or child, and seeing the smiles and hearing, “thank you, I loved my party”! I remind myself why I got in business and why I should stay the course.
My struggle is very real. I have so many friends, family and strangers who are all still practicing social distancing and have not come to my shop because of COVID. I have been at my location for over a year and have not seen many faces. The reason I stay is because, every day there’s another birthday, girls night out, baby or bridal shower, book signing or date night waiting to be scheduled. I stay to entertain my guests every need during these trying times. I stay for them…
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My business name says it all, Party-By-Design (A Canvas Themed Party Design for You). Getting to where I am today was not easy. COVID and other “At Home” Mobile paint party businesses is my biggest competition. We host canvas painting parties with your theme in mind. Provide us your desired canvas theme, we design the canvas, the tables and shop area with that theme in mind. We are more than just another canvas painting shop. We provide 5-Star customer service to every guest. Lessons I learned early is, you have to be open to doing business differently. We offer more than studio parties. We offer Studio service, Mobile service, DIY Paint Kit service and Virtual Party Services, all of which are different but FUN experiences.
My journey is somewhat new but seems like a lifetime. I have always had a passion for entertaining, hosting parties and helping others with theirs. I am a mother of two, a wife of 20 years. I am a Black, Woman-Owned local business in Stockbridge, Henry County, Ga. I go above and beyond to service my guest’s creatively, artistically, feasibly, genuinely and honestly.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Home is where my family loves to mingle, host a BBQ and have the best time with our friends. For great Italian food, we absolutely love the food at Pasta Max in McDonough GA. For the best southern breakfast, we adore Southern Fusion in Locust Grove, GA. For shopping, my absolute favorite is Lizard Thicket in McDonough, GA. But when traveling into the city for a good meal, great vibes and tasty Margaritas, No Mas Cantina, downtown Atlanta, GA. Lastly, for the best Paint and Sip party venue, Party-By-Design it is! We crank up the music, drink wine, dance, paint on canvas or glass and laugh a lot…
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first shoutout is to my husband, Sam. Sam has stuck by me after leaving a good job with great pay and flexibility. Sam, has taken on all household responsibilities financially and does the bulk of household work due to my absence from the house. He is a great provider, awesome cook and wonderful father. He makes it possible for me to have a business. And he works with me when I need him to. Another shoutout and a big THANKS, is to my son, London. London has been my righthand in managing the shop. Without London, I would not have made it through the pandemic. He helped with so many duties on a daily basis. He opened the shop, closed it, ran errands, painted designs, sketched designs, hosted parties and cleaned the shop prior to leaving for training. My daughter Paris, helps setup parties when she is there, so I must say thanks to her as well. But most of all and foremost my girlfriends, Tina, Kyshia, Keima and Denise, have been my rock and had my back! These ladies stood by me through it all. They helped by attending parties they didn’t have to. They cleaned after parties. They have purchased supplies more times than I can count. They have kept my daughter if I had late parties. They allowed me to vent, cry and nag about my business. They have attended nearly every event I’ve hosted. These ladies always have my back and never show up empty handed. They are ALWAYS willing to help, without me asking. The last shoutout is to my Mom. My mom has been a lending ear on a daily basis. She listens, she calls, she checks in, she likes and comments on every picture, she checks in after every event, she lends her advice for any situation. Without each person I have shouted out, I would not be in business today…
