We had the good fortune of connecting with Shakeyla Shinholster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shakeyla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I didn’t even know that I was starting a business. I was just having fun creating, and people became interested in my art. My passion for art somehow turned into a business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist what sets me apart is that I paint with my mouth. The most proud I am of my career is that I am a testament of not judging a book by its cover. Having a disability can make people under estimate you, but being an artist is something that no one can ever take away from me. Inspiring the youth with my art is something that I’m really proud of. A lot of young people feel unseen and not heard, and when they hear my story they feel inspired to conquer their dreams no matter the struggles they may face. I got this far with my faith in God. My purpose is bigger than what I could have imagined for myself. It’s not easy. I have felt defeated numerous times, and wanted to give up. I overcome the challenges by remembering that it’s all bigger than me and my emotions. I’ve learned to prepare myself more, and not to start working last minute. I want the world to know that yes I am physically limited, but my creativity makes me limitless. Shakeyla’s Treasures is a brand where Creativity is limitless. For so long I was a wallflower, not wanting too many eyes on me, but now I let my light shine without a fear or a care in the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was visiting from out of town I’d take them to the Southern Arc Dance studio and Art Gallery in Newnan GA. It’s a fun and creative atmosphere. There’s never a dull moment. It’s filled with amazing people, and there’s amazing art on the walls. Then we’d head to Peachtree City. Hang out and get some food in the Avenue. Afterwards go to Lake McIntosh, watch the water and relax.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my mother, Angelia! She assists me so much in my business venture, and in life. She believes in me more than I believe in myself. Thanks mom. I love you!
